GHS: Games of the Week (Jan. 23-25)

From Warroad to Valleyfair, here are this week's top GHS matchups.

January 23
Northfield vs. Orono - 3:30 PM

The first game involving high school teams on the Hockey Day Minnesota Ice is a clash of state qualifiers from last year as the Raiders face the Spartans. 

Northfield is coming off a 12-0 rout of Red Wing. The Raiders forwards are led by senior Emily Beaham (5 goals, 10 assists, 15 points), juniors Ashlyn Paukert (7-9-16), Taylor Krohn (10-10-20) and Lindsey Erickson (8-5-13), sophomore Emma Peroutka (16-14-30), as well as freshman Reese Peroutka (12-20-32) carry most of the play up front. 

On defense, senior Olivia Rasmussen (1-6-7) and junior Mia Miller (Minnesota State commit, 22-22-44) bring plenty of skill and experience to a young group. Sophomores Lillian Jindra (7-9-16), Isabelle Paulson (3-3-6), and Gwen Tapper(0-5-5) are improving with each game.

At goaltender, senior Macy Mueller (1.81 goals against average) has carried most of the goaltending duties for the Raiders this season, but they have utilized junior Belle Torgeson (.900 save percentage) and freshman Delaney Shimota (.916 save percentage) as well.

Orono is coming off a 2-1 victory over Moorhead. At forward, seniors Zoe Lopez (Minnesota State commit, 23-11-34), Macy Rasmussen (Ohio State commit, 12-12-24), and Anna Rausch (St. Norbert commit, 7-11-18), along with junior Maddy Kimbrel (Wisconsin commit, 10-14-24) give the Spartans consistent scoring depth. Sophomore Alex Christian (7-12-19) continues her strong season, while freshman Gabi Lopez (10-11-21) star only seems to be rising higher.  

On defense, seniors Alex Paulsen (2-14-16), Anika Fortin (0-8-8), Jaid Schultz (0-3-3), and Veronica Anderson (0-4-4) provide experience and poise to the Orono blueline. Sophomores Sydney Anderson (0-2-2) and Ryan Regan (0-7-7) are making steady progress. 

At goaltender, the Spartans have leaned on sophomore Vivienne Anderson (1.78 goals against average) for most of the starts this season, but they have utilized senior Maddie Forsyth (.963 save percentage) as well.  


Mia Miller, Northfield

January 23
Brainerd/Little Falls vs. Shakopee - 7:30PM

With the Valleyfair staples roller coasters of the Corkscrew and Wild Thing in the background, the Warriors make their way to Shakopee to take on the Sabers as part of Hockey Day Minnesota, although the game will not be televised. 

Brainerd/Little Falls is coming off a 5-1 loss to Roseau. The Warriors are led at forward by seniors Brianna Finnegan (6-5-11), Jaelyn Wharton (3-7-10), Kate Boberg (6-5-11), and Brynn Thoma (5-4-9), who lead a modest offense that averages less than two goals per game. 

On defense, seniors Aubree Caauwe (1-8-9) and Aizlynn Ford (1-5-6), junior Emma Neuwirth, along with freshman Izzy Johnson (0-1-1), lock down play in their own zone by denying the middle of the ice.  

The Flying Warriors boast last year's Summit Service Award winner in senior Ericah Folden (Bowdoin commit, 2.17 goals against average) is one of the best in the state. 

Shakopee is coming off a 3-2 loss to Prior Lake. The Sabers are led at forward by seniors Hannah Grabianowski (17-12-29), Elisabeth Canny (9-9-18), and Emerson Young (10-15-25), who try to lead the way offensively for the Sabers. 8th grader Carmen Benedict (14-17-31) and Sage Siebenaler (6-11-17) are two stars on the rise.

On defense, seniors Callie Peterson (3-22-25), Alexandra Snowden (0-5-5), and Paige Hillman (3-9-12), sophomore Morgan Berg (1-5-6), and Jaelyn Miner (3-5-8) play with patience and a safe, defensively responsible style of game.

At goaltender, junior Brooke Frey (2.31 goals against average) has carried most of the workload for Shakopee this season, but they have utilized freshman Olivia Toczek (.883 save percentage) as well.

January 24
Andover at Hill-Murray - 7:00 PM

The Huskies make their way to Polar Arena to take on the Pioneers in this late-season clash of Class AA contenders.  

Andover is coming off a 4-1 victory over Grand Rapids/Greenway. Seniors Maya Engler (St. Thomas commit, 13-9-22), Hannah Christenson (Northeastern commit, 10-9-19), Amelia McQuay (Bethel commit, 1-4-5), Ella Thoreson (5-3-8) and Hanna Olson (St. Lawrence commit, 11-11-22) leads the way for an experienced Huskies' forward group. 

The Huskies' power play has been effective, finding the back of the net at a 34.6% rate.  

On defense, seniors Mackenzie Jones (Wisconsin commit, 7-19-26) and Courtney Little (St. Thomas commit, 5-12-17) are one of the best defense pairings in the state, and they will be tasked with shutting down the Pioneers' dynamic attack. Sophomore Taylor Schreifels (4-10-14) and freshmen Molly Clough (0-1-1) and Lena Fenske have shown steady improvement with each game.  

At goaltender, junior Clairebella Hills (1.13 goals against average) has carried most of the workload this season for the Huskies, but they have utilized sophomore Jade Karnowski (1.25 goals against average) as well. 

Hill-Murray is coming off a 2-0 victory over Dodge County. The Pioneers are led at forward by a talented trio of sophomores Jaycee Chatelain (15-23-38), Emily Pohl (22-20-42), and Elliana Engelhardt (15-18-33), who carry most of the scoring for the Pioneers. Senior Ella Hornung (Hamline commit, 9-5-14) provides experience and leadership in addition to offense. Freshman Gwynn Skoogman (6-13-19) is off to a fast start this season, and 8th-grader Anna Pohl (3-9-12) is showing more promise in each game. 

On defense, seniors Josie Skoogman (3-10-13) and Kasey Senden (4-15-19), along with sophomore Addy McLay (1-6-7), as well as freshmen Olivia Braunschausen (0-9-9) and Jahnica Holtzleicer (0-9-9) give the Pioneers are mobile, skilled and help the Pioneers transition quickly from defense to offense.

At goaltender, the Pioneers have split starts between junior Charlotte Oscarson (2.28 goals against average) and 8th-grader Piper Tam (1.77 goals against average) this season.  


Anna Pohl, Hill-Murray

January 25
Moorhead at Warroad - 12:00 PM 

The Spuds travel to Warroad's Gardens Arena to take on the Warriors, hoping to earn a Greater Minnesota conference sweep. Moorhead prevailed 4-3 against Warroad on December 21st, can they do it again?

Moorhead is coming off a 2-1 loss to Orono.  The Spuds are led up front by seniors Olivia Kortan (15-19-34), Addie Salvevold (6-9-15), and Addie Moos (8-5-13) as well as junior Haylee Melquist (15-13-28) along with sophomores Anna Bjorkman (9-12-21) and Shay Benson (12-11-23) give Moorhead balanced scoring through its top two lines.

On defense, the Spuds are led by seniors Anika Stromme (2-8-10), Kendall Lund (0-1-1), and Kellsey Kludt (2-13-15), as well as junior Lucey Wilson (3-16-19), are a source of stability that helps gives Moorhead a lot of confidence their end of the ice is taken care of.  

Senior Taylor Kressin (1.59 goals against average) has carried most of the workload this season at goaltender. Still, they have also utilized fellow senior Alison Moszer (two shutouts).

Warroad is coming off a 2-0 victory over River Lakes. The Warriors are led up front by senior Kaiya Sandy (13-16-29), junior Taylor Reese (16-13-29), and Sam Earhart (5-9-14), as well as sophomore Jaylie French (17-19-36), giving the Warriors plenty of firepower. Freshmen Karlee Kalbrener (4-17-21) and Lindsey Lorenson (4-6-10), as well as 8th-grader Olivia Anthony (4-7-11), have played with poise well beyond their years.

The Warriors' power play has been heating up lately, finding the back of the net at a 30.3% success rate.  

At defense, senior Katy Comstock (Bemidji State commit, 9-22-31) leads an experienced group of juniors in Vivienne Marcowka (4-8-12), Kate Johnson (1-3-4) and Reagan Haley (2-12-14) who are battle-tested by one of the most challenging schedules in the state. 

The Warriors' penalty kill is pretty good, killing opposing power plays at a 92.9% rate.

At goaltender, junior Payton Rolli (1.21 goals against average) has made every start this season for the Warriors.  


Taylor Reese, Warroad

January 25
Edina at Benilde-St. Margaret's - 2:00 PM

The Hornets travel to St. Louis Park Rec Center to take on the Red Knights in a game with major seeding ramifications in Section 6AA. 

Edina is coming off a 6-4 victory over Maple Grove. The Hornets are led at forward by senior Whitney Horton (St. Thomas commit, 13-13-26), juniors Lorelai Nelson (Penn State commit, 12-16-28), Cate McCoy (Dartmouth commit, 14-9-23) and Charlotte Theirl (7-9-16) give the Edina plenty of sting up front. Sophomore Audrey Davis (11-19-30) has emerged as a go-to scoring threat for the Hornets.  

The Hornets' power play has been absolutely on fire, lighting the lamp at a 36.6% rate this season.

On defense, senior Camille Dubuc (Quinnipiac commit, 5-14-19), juniors Brenna Prellwitz (6-5-11) and Taylor Gardner (2-6-8), as well as sophomores Kaylan Kapsen (0-8-8), Libby Moe (2-13-15) and Lilly Horton (0-1-1) help Edina control the pace of play.  

At goaltender, seniors Nora Hannan (St. Thomas commit, 1.10 goals against average) and Reese McConnell (1.33 goals against average) have split starts this season. 

Benilde-St. Margaret's is coming off a 5-0 victory over Proctor/Hermantown and is riding a 6-game win streak. The Red Knights forward group is led by seniors Kendall Hassler (Minnesota State commit, 18-12-30) along with sophomores Talla Hansen (16-18-34), Katie Zakrajsheck (8-19-27), Josie Virnig (2-11-13) and Brynn Heising (8-7-15) give Benilde-St. Margaret's plenty of skill and scoring up front. 

On defense, seniors Lulu Rucinski (Maine commit, 11-20-31), Addie Morris (Bemidji State commit), 5-6-11), Ella Pasqua (Quinnipiac commit, 5-8-13) and Bailey Gray (Delaware commit, 5-9-14) give Benilde-St. Margaret's a top-four who is equally adept at shutting opponents down as well as finding the back of the net on their own.  

Benilde-St. Margaret's penalty kill doesn't give up much, stifling opposing power plays at a 90.2% rate.  

At goaltender, senior Elie Hancock (1.43 goals against average) has started the majority of games for the Red Knights, but they have utilized sophomore Emma Matack (1.17 goals against average) this season.
