YHH Staff's take on the top-10's across all levels of girls' hockey.

Class AA Girls

Reese McConnell stopped 40 shots in Edina's 0-0 tie with Benilde-St. Margaret's last week.

1. Minnetonka (19-2-1)

The Skippers picked up back-to-back shutouts over North Wright County and Blaine last week. The Skippers have allowed just 23 goals all season and are heavily favored in their last three games against Wayzata, Stillwater, and Eden Prairie.

2. Benilde-St. Margaret’s (16-2-3)

Lots of zeroes on the week for the Red Knights, who blanked Bloomington Jefferson 7-0 before tying No. 3AA Edina 0-0 in the de facto battle for the top seed in Section 6AA. Chaska/Chanhassen, Woodbury, and Eden Prairie are the last games on the docket for the Red Knights.

3. Edina (17-3-1)

The Hornets pumped 67 shots on goal in two games last week and emerged with a single goal, coming in a 1-0 win over Eden Prairie. The Hornets will finish the regular season with games against North Wright County, Cretin-Derham Hall, and Buffalo.

4. Centennial/Spring Lake Park (20-2)

The Cougars thumped Robbinsdale Armstrong/Cooper 14-1 and then squeaked by North Wright County 2-1 to go 2-0 on the week. The Cougars have Blaine and White Bear Lake this week.

5. Hill-Murray (16-6)

If I believed in “punishing” teams because they should have won games by more goals, Hill-Murray would have a solid case to push past Centennial/Spring Lake Park after topping previous No. 5AA Andover and No. 8AA Holy Family. Fortunately for the Cougars, I am a benevolent god with a mediocre wifi connection.

As it stands, the Pioneers remain ranked sixth, though the wins over the Huskies and Fire remind all of us that they’ll likely be in the final four mix at the state tournament.

6. Andover (15-6-1)

Andover remains the obvious favorite in Section 7AA, but the 2-1 loss to Hill-Murray last week dims the wattage of whatever a state tournament run could have in store for the Huskies. The regular-season schedule finishes with challenging games against Champlin Park/Coon Rapids, Orono, and Moorhead.

7. Roseau (19-4)

A 4-2 win over Crookston last week runs the Rams’ current winning streak to four games. Ms. Hockey hopeful Payton Remick finished with a goal and four points in the win over the Pirates.

8. Holy Family (15-7)

The Fire benefits from the Moorhead loss to stay at No. 8AA this week despite last week’s 2-1 loss to Hill-Murray. Hutchinson, Delano/Rockford, and Cretin-Derham Hall round out the Fire’s regular season schedule.

9. Maple Grove (14-6-3)

Back-to-back shutouts bring Bella Prosser’s season total to eight, as the Crimson beat Blaine 2-0 and Osseo/Park Center 3-0. The Crimson penalty-killing unit went a perfect 6-for-6 in the win over OPC. Maple Grove will finish the season with Stillwater and Hill-Murray.

10. Moorhead (15-7-1)

The frustrations continue for Moorhead after suffering a third consecutive 2-1 loss, this time at the hands of No. 1A Warroad. Granted, all three of those losses have come on the road against quality opponents, but the Spud power play going 1-13 across those three games leaves much to be desired.

Payton Remick, Roseau

Class A Girls

Zoe Lopez, Orono

1. Warroad (19-3)

The Warriors blanked Thief River Falls 3-0 and edged No. 10AA Moorhead 2-1. The Warriors have now allowed more than one goal in any game since Dec. 21. Dominance in its purest form.

Warroad will close the regular season with three road games against Roseau, Moose Lake Area, and Rock Ridge.

2. Orono (14-5-3)

Wins over Minneapolis and Northfield give the Spartans five straight victories. Zoe Lopez has now passed the 200-point mark for her career.

3. Dodge County (16-3-2)

Routine 6-0 wins over Eagan and Hastings were followed by a puzzling 4-4 tie with Eastview (7-13-3) last week. The Wildcats will finish the regular season with Northfield, Lakeville South, and Osseo/Park Center.

4. Holy Angels (14-5-3)

The Stars scored four times in the second period to pull away from Chaska/Chanhassen for a 6-2 win in their only game last week. Waconia, Hill-Murray, and Minneapolis will conclude the regular season slate for Section 4A’s likely top seed.

5. Proctor/Hermantown (16-6)

The Mirage allowed just 15 shots on goal in a 1-0 win over Mound Westonka/Southwest Christian last Monday.

6. Breck (15-6)

Breck beat Gentry Academy, Chisago Lakes, and Thief River Falls by a combined score of 19-5  last week. According to the MN Girls’ Hockey Hub, the Mustangs have just two scheduled games left, leaving them two shy of the typically 25-game schedule.

7. Albert Lea (18-3-1)

Three wins in six games give the Tigers a winning streak of eight heading into the final few games of the regular season. A revenge game against Owatonna (one of three teams to beat Albert Lea) is up next on Jan. 28, and then the regular season will conclude with tilts against Rosemount and Rochester Century/John Marshall.

8. Blake (13-9-1)

The Bears downed Northfield 3-1 before suffering consecutive close losses to unranked Class AA programs Cretin-Derham Hall and North Wright County by scores of 2-0 and 2-1, respectively.

9. Mound Westonka/Southwest Christian (14-10)

The White Hawks bounced back from a 1-0 loss to Proctor/Hermantown with wins over Delano/Rockford and Willmar. The White Hawks have been shut out in their last three losses.

10. Marshall (20-2-1)

The Tigers are the first ranked Class A team to reach the 20-win summit, shutting out New Ulm 4-0 and South Central 7-0. Marshall will now close with Section 3A rival Luverne and Minnesota River. The game against the Bulldogs gives the Tigers a chance to avenge an earlier 1-1 tie.

Duluth makes the 3.5 hour cross state drive to ALEX to win the Big Ole tourney Sunday. They beat top-10 teams Edina Green and Wayzata to push themselves up to #2 in the state.

After Chaska-Chan, teams ranked from 2-6 has been a major bottleneck the last six weeks.

The Hornets have won six of their last seven games, including a win over intra-city foe Edina Green.

There was a lot of activity last week in 12A.

Orono-Westonka won the Hutch tourney and Centennial-SLP won the Moorhead. Those wins solidified the middle.

As for the bottom three teams? It is anyone's guess from week to week. Alex enters the chat with a nice win over Shakopee at Valleyfair last week. The Cards have won six in a row.
