BHS: Games of the Week (Feb. 13-15)

From Champlin Park to Moorhead, here are this week's top BHS matchups.

February 13
Alexandria at Monticello - 7:00 PM

The Cardinals travel down I-94 to Moose Sherritt Arena in Monticello to take on the Moose in an intriguing Class A battle.

Alexandria is coming off a 6-1 loss to Champlin Park and has only won two out of their last five games. The Cardinals are led at forward by juniors Charlie Bassen (7 goals, 7 assists, 14 points), Brody Berg (14-6-20), and Evan Klimek (7-10-17), along with sophomores Grady Olson (6-15-21) and Ehren Anderson (8-3-11) give the Cardinals grit and scoring up front.

On defense, seniors Aiden Schneiderhan (1-2-3), Hudsen Carlson (1-3-4), and Trey Pfeffer (2-1-3), junior Niklas Schultz (1-9-10), sophomore Grady Suchy (2-4-6) round out the Cardinals blueline corps.  

The Cardinals have split goaltending duties between junior Brady Schluter (2.44 goals against average) and senior Grady Loch (.875 save percentage) this season.

YHH recently interviewed Monticello Head Coach Eric Nelson as part of its Rink of Fire podcast.  

Monticello is coming off a 5-1 victory over Cambridge-Isanti and has won seven out of their last eight games. Monticello is led at forward by seniors Landon Scherber (23-32-55) and Nathan Poeppel (17-14-31), as well as juniors Ashton Stoll (15-24-39) and Liam O'Donnell (8-9-17) carry most of the scoring for the Moose up front. 

On defense, seniors Ezra Pemberton (1-5-6) and Aidan Widmark (6-21-27), juniors Brady McGriff (5-8-13) and Levi Welle (6-4-10), as well as talented sophomore Nicklas Nelson (10-29-39) are a group that likes to join the attack.  

Senior Logan Blahnik (1.52 goals against average) has made nearly every start for Monticello this season at goaltender.   


Brody Berg, Alexandria

February 13
Lakeville South at Champlin Park - 7:00 PM

The Cougars travel north to face the Rebels in an intriguing matchup of teams that hope to cause some disruption in the section playoffs.  

Lakeville South is coming off a 4-3 victory over Prior Lake and is feeling the momentum after winning four of their last five games. Lakeville South is led up front by seniors Oscar Balkins (11-18-29), Jackson Ernst (20-19-39), Will Kortan (8-12-20), Brayden Olsen (9-9-18), and Jack Starfield (7-9-16) as well as junior Carter Ernst (19-26-45) give the Cougars two solid scoring lines. 

Senior Luke Johnson (1-4-5), juniors Gavin Lafferty (1-14-15), Adam Moline (1-2-3), and Emmett Hartmann (0-3-3), sophomore Charlie Hunst (3-4-7) round out Lakeville South's blueline which tries to help the Cougars transition quickly from defense to offense.

At goaltender, senior Carson Hauger (.853 save percentage) has carried most of the goaltending duties this season for the Cougars, but they have utilized senior Logan Klaren (.910 save percentage) as well.

YHH recently interviewed Champlin Park's Brent Solomon as part of its Rink of Fire podcast.

Champlin Park is coming off a 6-1 rout of Alexandria and has won four out of their last five games. The Rebels are led up front by seniors Brent Solomon (Wisconsin commit, 33-16-49), Cole Perkins (8-14-22), and Nick Carlson (7-32-39), along with junior Carson Anderson (9-15-24), who carry a majority of the scoring for Champlin Park. Sophomore Luke Carlson (7-2-9) and freshman Brody Holoien (9-14-23) have emerged as key contributors for the Rebels this season. 

The Rebels' power play is rolling along at 29%.

On defense, seniors Evan Long (5-20-25), Jax Warren (3-10-13), Max Janisch (3-6-9), and Brockton Sandell (0-5-5), along with sophomore Derek Roehl (0-6-6) give the Rebels a very capable top four that can chip in at both ends of the ice.  

At goaltender, the Rebels lean on junior Tanner Wylie (.877 save percentage) but have also utilized senior Cameron Dreifke (.892 save percentage) this season.


Jackson Ernst, Lakeville South

February 14
Chisago Lakes at Hibbing/Chisholm - 7:00 PM

There may not be a lot of love between these two teams on Valentine's Day as the Wildcats make their way up to Memorial Arena in Hibbing.  

Chisago Lakes is coming off a 5-2 loss to Minneapolis, but they have won five out of their last seven games. The Wildcats are led at forward by seniors Alex Bever (10-13-23), Ben Kerkow (7-8-15), and Max Bobrowski (16-12-28), as well as juniors Jacob Kletti (16-19-35), Landon Kerkow (4-10-14) and Austin Slettom (11-9-20) set the pace offensively for Chisago Lakes. Kletti has been on fire in the second half of the season.

The Wildcats' power play is heating up, finding the back of the net at a 31.9% rate.

On defense, senior Lucas Ide (3-7-10), along with juniors Max Koch (4-21-25), Colton Whiterabbit (2-6-8), and Cooper Toepper (4-5-9), as well as sophomore Drake Nelson (0-2-2) round out Chisago Lakes' blueline which is very active at both ends of the ice.

Junior Shandley Corbin (.907 save percentage) has carried most of the goaltending duties for Chisago Lakes this season, but they have utilized senior Brett Hanson (.866 save percentage) as well. 

Hibbing/Chisholm is coming off a 4-0 victory over Detroit Lakes. The Bluejackets are led up front by a trio of juniors in Tate Swanson (14-30-44), Isaiah Hildenbrand (7-23-30), and Kelin Elsner (10-4-14), who carry most of the scoring load for the Bluejackets. Senior Jace Kampsula (18-9-27), junior Benny Galli (9-11-20), and freshman Cole Swanson (11-21-32) provide additional scoring punch up front. 

The Bluejackets' power play is converting on 30.4% of its chances.  

On defense, juniors Ethan Sundvall (11-21-32), Landon Krampotich (3-5-8), and Mason McDonald (0-5-5), as well as sophomore Dylan Vesel (1-6-7) and freshman Whitaker Rewertz (6-8-14) are all skilled puck movers. Talented sophomore Jackson Strukel (0-3-3) is showing improvement with each game giving the Bluejackets another skilled two-way defender that can chip in offensively.   

Hibbing/Chisholm's penalty kill is solid, shutting down opposing power plays at a 91.9% success rate.

At goaltender, senior Rex Walli (2.37 goals against average) shoulders most of the goaltending workload for Hibbing/Chisholm, but they have given opportunities to junior Gavin Lamphere (.832 save percentage) and senior Tim Urdahl (.857 save percentage) to battle for starts as well.

February 15
Warroad at Northern Lakes - 2:00 PM

The Warriors make their way down to Hallett Community Center to face the Lightning to finish off the 2024-25 regular season in a good primer for both teams heading into the section playoffs.

Warroad is coming off a 4-0 victory over Cloquet/Esko/Carlton and feels confident after winning their last five games. The Warriors are led up front by senior Taven James (22-26-48), along with junior Ryan Shaugabay (15-27-42) and sophomore Gavin Andersen (7-12-19), who has emerged as an essential source of scoring for the Warriors.

On defense, juniors Broden Hontvet (8-24-32), Sam Hard (8-7-15) and Thomas Grapentine (1-2-3) and sophomores Ryan Lee (2-4-6) and Wesley Schreiner (3-3-6) provide experience and carry most of the secondary scoring the for the Warriors.  

At goaltender, the Warriors have rotated between junior Patrick Kennedy (2.44 goals against average) and sophomore Finn Hanson (1.70 goals against average) as well.

Northern Lakes is coming off a 4-3 victory over St. Cloud Cathedral and have won five out of their last six games. The Lightning scoring effort is led up front by seniors Drew Paulbeck (27-15-42), Easton Anderson (7-10-17) and Jerome Martin (12-14-26), junior Jacob Peterson (13-9-22), as well as sophomore Parker Fulton (6-7-13) carry most of Northern Lakes' scoring. 

On defense, senior Wyatt Balmer (2-20-22) and junior Leyton Cable (0-9-9) lead a young defense corps. Sophomores Grant Vershey (1-8-9) and Brodie Nybakken (0-4-4) have shown steady improvement as the season has progressed.

At goaltender, sophomore Sam Suja (1.95 goals against average) has carried most of the goaltending duties for the Lightning, but they have utilized juniors Hunter Moreland (1.45 goals against average) and Damon John (.818 save percentage) as well.


Ryan Shaugabay, Warroad

February 15
Moorhead at Hill-Murray - 3:00 PM

It's almost like a classic Western movie showdown as these two Class AA powers finally face off against one another in the last game of the regular season. Could this one have some state tournament seeding ramifications on the line?

YHH recently interviewed Moorhead's Mason Kraft as part of its Rink of Fire podcast.

Moorhead is coming off an 8-1 victory over Brainerd and has the steady confidence of a 22-game winning streak. The Spuds are led at forward by seniors Mason Kraft (Minnesota State commit, 27-41-68), Carver Hasbargen (8-14-22), and Brooks Cullen (Michigan State commit, 15-18-33), as well as talented sophomore Zac Zimmerman (22-32-54) and junior Tyden Bergeson (19-17-36). Sophomore Max Cullen (10-10-20) is gaining more confidence with each game.

The Spuds' power play is dangerous, finding the back of the net at a success rate of 34.8%.

On defense, seniors Aiden Dufault (0-8-8) and Carter Huotari (0-5-5), as well as juniors Brandon Mickelson (6-28-34), Brady Steffen (2-7-9) and Zak Devig (0-10-10) along with Drew Simonich (2-12-14) play an intelligent game and move the puck efficiently around the offensive zone and help the team break out of their own end with pace.

Senior goaltender Charlie Stenehjem (1.71 goals against average) has made every start for the Spuds this season.

Hill-Murray is coming off a 4-3 victory over Rogers and has only lost once in their last 11 games. The Pioneers are led up front by seniors Boden Sampair (Holy Cross commit, 27-33-60) and Jackson Reeves (11-10-21), junior Chaz Lentz (16-30-46), sophomores Riley Zupfer (19-23-42) and Caden Zasada (12-6-18) give Hill-Murray solid scoring depth.

On defense, seniors Graham Greeder (Minnesota State commit, 10-21-31), Landon Cottingham (Alaska-Fairbanks commit, 7-16-23) and John Kelly (2-14-16), juniors Casper Lang (3-14-17) and Tommy Miller (5-10-15), sophomore Carson Scott (2-9-11) all bring a mix of size, skill and strong two-way play to the Pioneers' blueline.

Hill-Murray's penalty kill has been stifling opposing power plays at a 92.2% rate this season.

At goaltender, the Pioneers have rotated between junior Grayson Hanggi (1.55 goals against average) and senior Jackson Johnson (.934 save percentage) this season.
