Top-10 Seniors and three goalies named for Mr. Hockey and Frank Brimsek awards

Since 1985, the Mr. Hockey Award has been given to a senior boys' hockey player by the Minnesota All Sports Alliance (formerly the Minnesota Minute Men). The award touts numerous NHL players as winners, including Stanley Cup winner Tom Chorske, who won the inaugural award in 1985.

Last season, Minnetonka's Hagen Burrows was named Mr. Hockey. Burrows totaled 135 points in his high school career and is currently playing for the Denver Pioneers. He was a fourth-round pick of the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2024.

The Frank Brimsek Award (formerly known as Mr. Goalie) has been awarded since 1995. Blaine's Todd Kelzenberg won the first version of the award before embarking on a collegiate career at Minnesota State. Chanhassen goaltender Kam Hendrickson won the award last year. He is currently committed to UConn.

2025 Mr. Hockey Award Finalists

Brent Solomon

Brent Solomon, Champlin Park

Player: Brent Solomon
Team: Champlin Park
Position: Forward
College commitment: Wisconsin
NHL Central Scouting Rank: 161

Not many hockey fans in Minnesota knew much about Champlin Park a few years ago - until Brent Solomon joined the team.

After a quiet sophomore season, the forward burst onto the scene as a junior and dazzled onlookers by scoring a team-high 34 goals that year. As a senior, Solomon has earned himself a commitment to the University of Wisconsin. He has 51 points to his name in 2024-25, and he’s also listed on the NHL Central Scouting list for the upcoming 2025 NHL Draft.

Boden Sampair

Boden Sampair, Hill-Murray

Player: Boden Sampair
Team: Hill-Murray
Position: Forward
College commitment: Holy Cross

Everyone knew Boden Sampair was talented when he led the Pioneers in scoring as a junior in 2023-24, but he has taken his game to a whole different level as a senior.

The Holy Cross commit has logged 66 points so far this season, which means he leads the current No. 1-ranked team in Minnesota in goals (30), assists (36), and overall scoring. Sampair is one of the reasons why the Pioneers have been so dangerous this year, posting a 22-2-1 record. Hill-Murray is no stranger to the state tournament, but Sampair and his squad are looking to bring another title back to their school in just a few weeks

Cooper Simpson

Cooper Simpson, Shakopee

Player: Cooper Simpson
Team: Shakopee
Position: Forward
College commitment: North Dakota
NHL Central Scouting Rank: 67

Regarding the upcoming NHL Draft, Shakopee’s Cooper Simpson could be the highest player chosen in the graduating class of 2025 in Minnesota high school hockey.

The senior forward is in his fourth season on varsity for the Sabers. He started to turn heads as just a freshman when he led the team in goals (24) and then proceeded to get better and better in his sophomore and junior years. Simpson is now on a tear as a senior and has racked up 43 goals, the second most in the entire state.

Although Shakopee hasn’t been able to get to the Class AA state tournament yet during Simpson’s time on varsity, they’ll have a great shot at doing so this spring. Simpson is committed to play Division I hockey at North Dakota.

Henry Lechner

Henry Lechner, Holy Angels

Player: Henry Lechner
Team: Academy of Holy Angels
Position: Forward
College commitment: St. Thomas

Senior forward Henry Lechner has broken just about every record there is to break at the Academy of Holy Angels. The record for goals in a single season, points in a single season, all-time points scored at the school - you name it, and he has likely broken it.

The captain of the Stars has the most career points (over 275) out of all the finalists for the Mr. Hockey award. In addition to that, Lechner leads the entire state of Minnesota in goals scored (44) and total points (90) this season. You simply can’t argue with that!

The University of St. Thomas commit has yet to appear at the Class AA state tournament with Holy Angels. Lechner and the Stars will look to change that this spring.

Jackson Rudh

Jackson Rudh, St. Thomas Academy

Player: Jackson Rudh
Team: St. Thomas Academy
Position: Forward
College commitment: Uncommitted

Forward Jackson Rudh wasted no time carving out a name for himself in the Minnesota high school hockey scene. As just a freshman, Rudh led Park in scoring with 43 points in just 25 contests. He then proceeded to lead the team in scoring again as both a sophomore and a junior.

Now, Rudh is playing his senior season at St. Thomas Academy, where the Cadets are a top team in Class AA, and he leads the roster in goals (25) and overall scoring (43). The senior forward has yet to commit to a college hockey program.

John Hirschfeld

John Hirschfeld, St. Cloud Cathedral

Player: John Hirschfeld
Team: St. Cloud Cathedral
Position: Forward
College commitment: Vermont

John Hirschfeld just so happens to be the only skater competing in Class A hockey to be a finalist for the Mr. Hockey award this season.

The senior forward won a state championship with St. Cloud Cathedral after securing a 3-1 victory over Hermantown in 2024. Hirschfeld had two assists in the title match and led the Crusaders in goals (27), assists (56), and total points (83) that season. The Vermont commit has racked up over 215 career points throughout his four years on varsity and led his team in overall scoring in three of those four seasons.

Josh Toll

Josh Toll, Rosemount

Player: Josh Toll
Team: Rosemount
Position: Defense
College commitment: St. Thomas

Rosemount is a team that has been on the rise over the past few seasons, and one of the reasons why is defenseman Josh Toll.

The St. Thomas commit has contributed 45 points to the Irish in 2024-25 from the blue line and has helped the team earn a record of 22-3, the best it has been since 2018-2019 when the squad also went 22-3. It’s clear that Toll is one of the best defenders in the state, and he’ll be looking to get Rosemount through a tough section and into the state tournament later this spring.

Mason Jenson

Mason Jenson, Rogers

Player: Mason Jenson
Team: Rogers
Position: Forward
College commitment: Ohio State

Mason Jenson has been the engine behind a talented Rogers squad over the past few years.

The senior forward has netted over 150 career points for the Royals during his three seasons on varsity. He’s had a personal best 40 goals and 41 assists for 81 total points in 2024-25, which leads Rogers in both goal-scoring and overall points scored. In fact, his 81 points are the second-most in the entire state at the current moment.

The Ohio State commit has yet to make an appearance at the state tournament with the Royals, but they’ll look to change that this year as one of the top teams in the Class AA rankings with a 20-3-2 overall record.

Mason Kraft

Mason Kraft, Moorhead

Player: Mason Kraft
Team: Moorhead
Position: Forward
College commitment: Minnesota State

Moorhead’s Mason Kraft just recently hit the 150 career point marker and is making his senior season his best one yet.

The Minnesota State commit leads the Spuds in goals (33), assists (43), and overall points (76) this year and has helped push Moorhead to the top of the Class AA standings for a majority of the year with a current record of 23-2-1. The senior forward made a state tournament berth as a sophomore, but the team is looking to return to the Xcel Energy Center in 2025 and win it all for the first time in school history.

Nolen Geerdes

Nolen Geerdes, Rogers

Player: Nolen Geerdes
Team: Rogers
Position: Defense
College commitment: Western Michigan
NHL Central Scouting Rank: 168

Rogers has had plenty of talented forwards on the squad over the past few years, but arguably the best player on the team is senior blueliner Nolen Geerdes.

The offensive-defenseman immediately made an impact on the varsity roster for the Royals as just a sophomore, but he really started to make a name for himself as a junior when he led the entire team in scoring by posting seven goals and 36 assists. Now, as a senior, Geerdes is committed to Western Michigan, he’s got 40 points for Rogers in 2024-25, and he was even listed on the prestigious NHL Central Scouting Midterm Report at No. 168 among North American skaters.

2025 Frank Brimsek Award Finalists

Leo Gabriel

Leo Gabriel, White Bear Lake

Player: Leo Gabriel
Team: White Bear Lake

Ever since his sophomore season, Leo Gabriel has been one of the top netminders in the state of Minnesota.

As just a 15-year-old goaltender, Gabriel posted a .904 save percentage, a 2.23 goals-against average, and five shutouts for the Bears, who went 20-6 in 2022-23. He then got even better as a junior by earning a .922 save percentage, a 1.95 goals-against-average, and a whopping eight shutouts with a White Bear Lake squad that appeared at the Class AA state tournament in 2024.

In his senior season, Gabriel wears a 'C' for his team and currently owns a .926 save percentage and a 1.74 goals-against average. White Bear Lake is 15-7-3 and will look to get back to the state tournament later this season.

Luka Marsalek

Luke Marsalek, Holy Angels

Player: Luke Marsalek
Team: Academy of Holy Angels

Luke Marsalek has gotten better and better in net every year that he has been on varsity at the Academy of Holy Angels.

The 6-foot-4 netminder became the starter for the Stars as just a sophomore and earned a .900 save percentage in 2022-23 as the team went 19-7-1. He then posted similar stats as a junior before eventually morphing into an extremely clutch netminder as a senior with a .936 save percentage and a 1.80 goals-against average in 2024-25.

The Stars haven't been able to make it to the state tournament yet during Marsalek's time on varsity, but he'll look to backstop them to the Xcel Energy Center this year as the team has an impressive 21-3-1 overall record. The senior goaltender recently surpassed his 2000th career save and 50th win in net.

Charlie Stenehjem

Charlie Stenehjem, Moorhead

Player: Charlie Stenehjem
Team: Moorhead

Stenehjem may have the least amount of varsity hockey experience in the list of Brimsek award finalists, but that certainly doesn't mean that he isn't deserving of the honor.

The senior goaltender became the starter for the Spuds this past fall, and he's been impressive ever since by posting a .912 save percentage, a 1.89 goals-against average, and four shutouts. Moorhead has been ranked as the top team in Class AA for a large portion of the season due to their 23-2-1 overall record, and a big part of that is due to Stenehjem and his consistent play in net. His 23 wins mark the most out of any boys' hockey netminder in Minnesota this season.

Moorhead is the No. 1 seed in Section 8AA, and they'll be looking to take their talents to the state tournament in March to win the first title in boys' hockey history.
