2025 Boys Goalie of the Year, Brandon Wright.
To the unfamiliar, being a hockey goaltender can appear to be nothing more than a mix of diving and lucky guesswork. Guarding the crease and patrolling the pipes does not always appear beautiful, a far cry from the eye candy of dekes and dangles.
Brandon Wright is different.
Wright combines an impressive level of athleticism, which is also on display during the soccer season for Mahtomedi High School, with a knack for analyzing and dissecting that would make him as natural a talent in a chess match as it does on the ice. He scans the rink from his crease the same way a hawk eyes the prairie for its dinner, waiting for the perfect moment to stretch out his glove or blocker. He communicates with his defenders like a general on a battlefield, regularly calling out directions before a defensive zone draw and alerting teammates to oncoming attackers.
In addition to a 21-21-5 record, Elite Prospects notes that Wright recorded a save percentage of .936 this season in over 2,100 minutes of ice time, and registered nine shutouts. In two Region games, Wright stopped 67 of 73 shots for a save percentage of .918. He had a save percentage above .900 in the Centennial Bantam AA Preview, the Battle for the Blue Ox, and the St. Michael-Albertville Preview Cup this season.
