Anton Frondell finished with a goal and an assist in Sweden's 3-2 win over Slovakia on Friday.
Alternate captain Tomas Pobezal scored Slovakia's first goal in Friday's loss.
The Star
Anton Frondell, Sweden
The third overall pick of last year's NHL Draft, Frondell registered a goal and an assist in Sweden's win on Friday, but it was the way he dictated play off the scoresheet that made him a star.
Even to the untrained eye, Frondell is clearly an exceptional talent. He wins puck battles along the wall, distributes the puck to players you would never have thought were open, and bullies his way into space. We should expect nothing less from last year's No. 3 overall NHL Draft pick.
The Stalwart
Felix Ohrqvist, Sweden
If you're looking for a fight, you'd do better to find someone easier to pick on than Ohrqvist, who plays like he can't wait to stick his face into a hornet's nest.
Ohrqvist put two shots on goal and played 18 minutes on Friday night, never shying away from contact in front of the Swedish net and consistently leading the pushing and shoving matches after whistles.
The Savior
Alan Lendak, Slovakia
Lendak earned the start over Detroit Red Wings third-rounder Michal Pradel in the Slovakia net and turned in a spectacular 29-save performance. Lendak made saves with all of his extremities, plus a couple with his face as the game progressed.
Without Lendak, Sweden could have hung a crooked number on the scoreboard.
Felix Ohrqvist, Sweden
Chase Reid was one of four goal scorer's in tonight's win for Team USA.
Maple Grove native Will Zellers led all skaters with two goals and three points on Friday night.
The Star
Will Zellers, USA
Nearly left off the invite list, Zellers turned in a two-goal, three-point performance in the opening game of the tournament for the United States. A year removed from scoring 44 goals and being named the USHL's Player of the Year, Zellers and his shot were on full display, as his second goal of the game helped cement the victory.
The Stalwarts
Anthony Spellacy and Brendan McMorrow, USA
Before the game, Spellacy and McMorrow had a simple instruction for their linemate, Will Zellers: shoot.
Spellacy finished with two assists, and McMorrow had one, and the duo's forecheck caused problems for Germany all night. Their physicality forced loose pucks, panicked decisions, and gray hairs for the German coaching staff.
The Savior
Dustin Willhoft, Germany
Despite the game's final score of 6-3, Germany was actually within a single goal of tying the contest twice, and Willhoft played a significant role in keeping the game close. The hard-working forward assisted on two of Germany's three goals in the loss.
