Jack Olsen takes it to the net versus Highland Central

On Saturday, April 13 YHH gave Jack Olsen the news he was our Wiz Wyatt Player of the Year.  On hand were his grandparents, Mom, Dad and one of his Sisters. He received the award at Hasse Arena in Lakeville and got a chance to meet Wiz Wyatt, the namesake of the award.  Jack was a bit surprised when he found out, and speechless to say the least.  Most observers would say he was really excited. Wyatt after presenting the award to Jack said, “Jack it’s truly an honor to meet you in person, I was blown away with all of your accomplishments you’ve had as an athlete and a student so far in your career.”

Earlier this month, Frederick61 chose 5o top players, Olsen was selected to that list as well. He also chose the entire Edina PeeWee AA as his Player of the Year.  A fitting gesture to a terrific team.  They have some great players on that team, two in fact were finalists for this award (Clayton Phillips and Peter Tabor). All of the finalists for the Wiz Wyatt Award (Olsen, Tabor, Phillips, Gavin Hain from Grand Rapids and Tyler Watkins from Hermantown) were the complete package: excelledat hockey, great students, were athletic outside of hockey, and were leaders on their team.

Olsen excelled at hockey.  He was a leader on a Lakeville South team that came within one game of the state tournament in the tough East Region. The Cougars had a great season winning three tournaments and amassing an amazing 42-8-4 record. Olsen is a puck rushing sensation with great speed, great hands and a very high hockey IQ.

His IQ isn’t just high on the ice, Jack has nearly a perfect GPA at McGuire Middle School in Lakeville (a cumulative 3.9 GPA). Jack’s leadership style is different than most kids his age.  He doesn’t say a lot.  But whatever Jack does, the team follows him, more by his actions than his words.

Two things that really stand out about Jack that don’t show up on his “resume”, both on the ice and off, is his attitude and smile. If he is at a ball field, hockey rink or class room…winning or losing, the kid always seems to be happy. Probably a virtue that will take him a lot further in life than his hockey and grades.

Jack was coached this year by his Dad, Mark (a former player at Colorado College), Richard Zemlak and Chad Schumacher. His Mom Kris is a big fan along with his sisters Megan (a Sophomore at Northwestern in Chicago) and Kelsey (Sophomore at Lakeville South).

Cougar Assistant coach Chad Schumacher summed it up best when he said of Olsen, “Tony, he’s the not just a great hockey player, he’s a great kid…”
