MPLS Purple celebrates their Region Championship and berth to State.

As we covered every PeeWee and Bantam Regional this weekend.  Click here for a complete list of the PeeWee Teams headed to State and click here for a complete list of the Bantam Teams headed to State. As we poured through the scores, the games, the pictures so many great stories came out of this weekend. Most at the PeeWee and Bantam level..but also a couple at Girls and Squirts out there, too.

PeeWee

Cottage Grove came out of nowhere the last two weeks and won the District 8 PWA crown last weekend and proved it wasn’t a fluke by winning the very tough East Region.

Luverne from District 4 is headed to state in PWA.  They are headed to State out of the South while higher rated and, bigger city and bigger association teams are staying home.  It must have been a great scene in Luverne when the Cardinals won on their home ice in front of their home fans.

District 5

St. Cloud, STMA  and Sartell all advance at the PeeWee level (St. Cloud and STMA in PWAA and Sartell in PWA and PWB). This is an up and coming district in MNH.  River Lakes did not advance but growth in their program at the younger ages is also very promising.

Other Notes

No major surprises in PWAA except maybe Lakeville South not advancing (someone in the East Region had to stay home, so not a shock). Hallock’s PWB team is still undefeated, what a great run this year for them. Minneapolis PeeWees won both the PWA and PWB Regions.

Bantam

BAA: Unranked White Bear Lake Bantam AA won the South Region beating St. Cloud, Rochester, and Minnetonka. OMG, another team not rated in the Bantam AA top 10 beat #4 Elk River and #1 Wayzata to win the West Region.

BA: Some tough fought Regionals in Bantam A but not a lot of surprises. Crow River wins the West Region…watch out they may be the second best team in state behind Mahtomedi right now.

BB: Wayzata Navy and Stillwater Red emerge in Bantam B as the two top teams in the state…they could meet in the semifinals at State. Both St. Cloud and Buffalo Black emerge of the South after beating D5 champ STMA. Denfeld is back in state as reigning State Champs. Chaska Chan emerges out of the tough East Region…they will be my sleeper pick for state in two weeks.

Girls

Edina, Shakopee, and White Bear advance out of the American Region. Farmington, Lakeville South and Eagan advance out of the National Region.  Huge kudos to Lakeville South for knocking off Eagan on Saturday. Brainerd and Duluth advance out of the Olympic Region, Duluth beats Roseau in the play-in game on Sunday after losing to them the day before.

Squirts

Minneapolis knocks off OMG in a shootout yesterday in the District 3 playoffs…second time in two weeks for the Storm. St. Cloud wins District 5 Squirt Championship.

AA/A Split

A lot of winners due to the AA/A split.  Obviously the additional teams to State.  But associations like Sartell and Edina are the big winners.  Luverne sends a team to state in PWA, enough said.  Edina’s 16-30 skaters get a chance to play A and AA teams all year and succeed.  Edina beat State bound STMA AA team and were able to beat other AA teams en route to state, when a year ago they would have been playing B hockey.

Edina Drama

It is not major news when Edina qualifies several teams to state…but yesterday they did it in dramatic fashion. In Championship of PWB, the Hornets won in OT…Brett Chorske with the GWG. In PWA, they beat Sibley in the play-in game after losing earlier to Cottage Grove. The Bantam AA team lost to Prior Lake in OT after having a goal disallowed and beat Woodbury 6-5 to advance to State. The Bantam A team beat Sibley in the play-in game 4-3 in OT and the Bantam B team missed a berth in state by losing to CC 2-1 to qualify.  A lot of nails chewed on yesterday for the Cake Eaters, I’m sure.
