Woodbury’s goalie looks like he is holding off the whole Brainerd team while making a save in yesterday’s 4-2 loss to the Warriors

There are four peewee AA/A tourneys going on around the Twin Cities this weekend.  YHH was at all four yesterday.  Here are some of our notes.

The Best Regional Tourney

By a long shot, the best regional tourney on Friday was the East Peewee A tourney at Wakota.  The games were exciting and South St. Paul always turns out for youth hockey.  That arena  was alive yesterday especially during the Edina A/Sibley and the Park Cottage Grove/Shakopee games.

The Quietest Regional Tourney

Walked in to Cottage Grove’s arena expecting to see some great fan excitement with two good games going on (PWAA Edina AA/Eastview, BAA Prior Lake/Rosemount) and was stunned by the silence and no crowd.  True there were fans in the stands, but the place was quiet.

The Bored Regional Tourney

The West Regional at the PIC had the earliest start and with teams for outside the cities (Moorhead and Brainerd) in the opening games, there was little for those running the tourney to do.  If you worked in the lower level, your mobile devices didn’t work.  That made it really boring.

The Funkiest Regional Tourney

The West Regional was played at St. Louis Park.  The big sheet was reserved for the peewee A tourney and it made for a surreal hockey environment.  With the games played on a sunny afternoon, the sunlight came through at one end creating one goal where the goalie was operating in bright sunlight and one goal where the goalie was operating in the dark.  It was different.

Edina AA makes it 51-0

The Peewee AA Regional tournament opened at Cottage Grove Friday afternoon at Cottage Grove with the quarterfinal round.  NOW’s two top ranked AA teams, #1 Edina AA and #2 Lakeville South are in this regional and are favored to meet in Sunday’s Championship game.

On Friday, they played their quarterfinal games.  The Hornets played Eastview and the Cougars played Minnetonka.  The Hornets beat the Lightning 4-1 to run their unbeaten (in Minnesota) streak to 51-0.  Minnetonka, a team that has struggled in the past two months pulled an upset beating the Cougars 6-5 in overtime.  There will be no match of #1 and #2 in the East Regional Championship game.

Which District’s teams fared the best in the East and West Regionals?

District 6 Peewee AA teams (Edina AA, Minnetonka AA, and Eden Prairie AA) all won in the East Regional.  If Edina AA beats White Bear Lake AA this afternoon, the East Regional Championship will be an all D6 affair.  Edina A had to come back from a 3 goal deficit to eke out a victory over Sibley 5-4 on a last minute goal in the third period.

Both District 15 teams won in the West Peewee AA tourney.  Brainerd beat Woodbury 4-2 and Moorhead beat Blaine 4-3 in triple overtime.

The Best Fan Support

The Edina A/Sibley game drew a lot of South St. Paul fans rooting for Sibley.  They really wanted Edina to lose.  Old rivalries run deep.

Biggest Surprise

Park Cottage Grove’s 5-4 win over Shakopee at Wakota.  The Wolfpack are beginning to make YHH believers.  They will go up against North St. Paul in the semifinals today.  The Polars also surprised beating New Prague 7-2.  The Trojans had been playing well in the last weeks before the tourney.  New Prague will have to comeback with a Saturday afternoon win over Shakopee.

Best Regional Program

That nod goes to the West Regional at the PIC.  Their program had the brackets, rosters, and more.  The worst was the West Regional at St. Louis Park.  Their program had the rosters and no brackets.

YHH has more notes, but the arenas are calling with games Saturday morning and early afternoon.  Now let’s see, there are some good games at Wakota, but those AA games at the PIC are….  How far is it from Wakota to the PIC?  Where’s Tony when you need him?
