Bantam AA: OMG’s goalie Brady Goodman is left prone after giving up a second period score the Crimson’s 6-1 loss to Wayzata Wednesday night at the PIC

Note: to minimize confusion, Bantam AA precedes all the bantam pictures and Peewee AA precedes all the peewee pictures.  Gives me a headache to see back to back games with two teams of different ages and in the same uniforms play.

Wayzata is hosting District 3’s AA playoffs this year at the PIC.  Last night both bantam AA and peewee AA second round games were played matching Wayzata’s AA teams against Osseo/Maple Grove’s AA teams.

Wayzata’s Bantam AA team is NOW ranked #1 Bantam AA team in the state and came into the game with a 41-3-4 record.  The Trojans beat OMG AA 4-2 in their first D3 playoff game of a three game set.  Last night the beat OMG AA 6-1 to win the D3 playoffs.

The Trojans proved too strong for the younger 22nd ranked Crimson.  Their fore checking shut down the younger OMG team, often bottling them up in the Crimson zone.  OMG’s goalie Brady Goodman kept the Crimson in the game for the first two periods.

The Trojans Dillon Riley scored unassisted with 8 seconds to go in the first period.  Billy Duma scored halfway through the second period to put Wayzata up 2-0.  Dominick Bouta got the assist.  The Trojans scored to take a 3-0 lead with less than two minutes on the clock in the second period.  Jeff Greeninger got the goal, Duma and T. Moss got the assists.  The third goal was a game killer for the Crimson.

Wayzata added three more goals in the third period to win 6-1.  Neither team is eliminated.  Both will move on to play in the West Regional.

Wayzata will play Moorhead, D#15’s #1 seed, in the third quarterfinal game played Friday, March 1 at the PIC.  OMG draws the winner of D10’s championship game played Sunday between Elk River and Centennial in the second game of the quarterfinals.

Wayzata Peewee AA team is ranked #4 by NOW.  They beat OMG AA’s in the first of their three D3 playoff games 3-1 and looked the favorite to beat the Crimson again last night at the PIC.  OMG is ranked #10 by NOW.

Instead, the Trojans lost 4-2 to OMG last to even the series.  The teams will play a final series game Saturday at the PIC.

The OMG’s peewee played a fast paced, up tempo game from the start.  In the first period, the Crimson outshot the Trojans 13-2.  They scored when Matt Jaglo simply outhustled everybody on the ice and put the puck in the net.  Mikie Davis got the assist.  The Crimson led 1-0 at the end of the first period.

The game slowed in the second period’s opening minutes.  Both teams played a controlled game and were able to move the puck, but OMG was getting the better scoring opportunities.

Six minutes into the second period, Wayzata’s Charlie Ankeny ended up with the puck in the slot and fired a hard shot into the upper right corner.  Even through the Trojans were trailing in shots on goal at the time 19-5, Ankeny’s one good shot tied the game 1-1.  Rhett Pitlick got the assist.

The Wayzata lead did not last.  A minute later, the Crimson’s Michael McNeil scored off of a rebound and a pass to put the Crimson ahead 2-1.  Mason Martinez got the assist.

Wayzata struck a minute later.  This time the Trojan’s Griffin Ness got the puck in the slot and put a hard shot into the upper left corner of the Crimson net.  Ness’s goal was almost identical to Ankeny’s goal, shot from the same spot.  It tied the game 2-2.  Drake Shaver got the assist.

It took OMG only a minute to score to take the lead for good.  Jaglo and Davis teamed up again for the score.  This time the Crimson’s Davis scored after a lot of hard work by the Crimson forwards, fore checking the Trojans off the puck in the Wayzata zone.  Jaglo got the assist.  OMG led 3-2.  This goal was the game winner.

At the end of the second period, OMG had outshot Wayzata 30-12.

Wayzata came back strong in the first half of the third period.  Halfway through the period, the Trojans started to control the flow of the game only to have the Crimson score and a minute after the score to have a weird penalty (?) called on them.

OMG’s McNeil got his second goal of the game with 6 minutes left in the third period.  The clincher put OMG ahead 4-2.  Following the penalty, on a Trojan offsides call, a Wayzata player shot the puck loudly into the OMG end boards.  The ref appeared to call a penalty, but none was recorded.

It stopped the game for awhile.  Once started, the game ended shortly after that with OMG wining 4-2.

The two teams play Saturday with D3’s #1 seed still up for grabs.  The D3 #1 seed will play Moorhead, D15 #2’s seed, Friday at the PIC in the West Regional.  The loser gets D3’s #2 pick and play the winner of the D10 championship game between Blaine AA and Centennial AA.  The D10 Peewee AA championship game is played at 12:45 PM this Sunday at Anoka.
