Eden Prairie SQB Red showing off their first place trophy.

A great afternoon of MLK hockey was played today. A favorite won (Rosemount), a team out of nowhere won (Eden Prairie), and two surprises won in Duluth (Farmington U12 and Edina Green in U10A).

Duluth Girls

Late last week my prediction of Stillwater U10A and Edina Green in U12A was questioned.  Question the guru of youth hockey in Minnesota? Unheard of (lol)!!!! Well I was wrong….again. Farmington stunned district 6 powers Edina Green (#1) and Shakopee (#2) in the same day. Congrats to the Tigers. Two 1-0 wins in Championship play earns me an egg on the face sometime soon. Edina Green, unranked and somewhat unproven so far this year stormed into Duluth and won four games including wins over OMG and Shakopee today in the Championship bracket.

These wins have the YHH Staff in “rattled” mode for the next 24 hours. Congrats to Farmington and Edina Green on great season long improvement, your hard work really paid off today.

Bloomington SQA Final

The old saying, “in big games, big names usually are the difference…” was not accurate.  Today, Rosemount’s “other guys” showed up in spades and helped the Irish to their second straight tournament win and kept them undefeated for the season. New names appeared today for Rosemount: Weismiller (Brady), Kenefick (Connor), Annelo (AJ), and Campbell (Mason) made play after play to help them to the SQA championship in Bloomington.

In the first period Weismiller knocked in a rebound to get the scoring started for the Irish, followed by pretty goal from Luke Levandowski to give Rosemount a two goal advantage. then six seconds later Mason Wheeler got a pass from Garret Horsager to give the Irish a 3-0 lead after 1.  The Irish had an amazing 16 shots on goal in the first period and 7 scoring chances.  Give Prior Lake credit, they weathered the storm and hung tough with Rosemount the rest of the way.

Prior Lake began to take it to Rosemount in the second.  Forcing Rosemount into three consecutive penalites and an extended five on three affair.  It was at this point that the Lakers could have made some hay.  Little man Mason Campbell captained a great penalty kill for the Irish and they escaped the Lakers pressure unscathed.  End of two, 3-0 Rosemount. The shots and scoring chances were even in the second.

Matt Beaty scored early in the third period to make it 3-1 for Prior Lake.  A hard working effort in front of the Irish net to cut the lead to two.  Rosemount circled the wagons and played great defense as Prior Lake gained momentum. Eventually Rosemount found a way to find an insurance goal. AJ Annelo scored on what seemed to be five or six passes from all over the offensive zone by Rosemount.  An exclamation point to a great tournament for Rosmount.  Congratulations to both teams on a great tournament!

All Tournament Team: Bobby Brink – Chaska Chanhassen, Anna Gallagher – LA Jr. Kings, Broten Sabo – Rosemount, Johnny Mittelstadt – Eden Prairie, Owen Neuharth – Prior Lake, and Luke Levandowski – Rosemount.

Tournament MVP: Kyle “Moose” Heffron, Rosemount

Bloomington SQB Final

Eden Prairie Red was a team off the radar of most SQB experts.  But their scores this weekend really caught our eye (big wins over good teams). Their wins were big, but their superstar was not.  Carter Batchelder is a pint sized wizard with the puck.  Coming into the finals versus Andover Gold, Carter had more goals than most teams in the field. The championship was no different.  After setting up the first goal to give EP a 1-0 lead he scored their third goal on one of his many breakaways to give EP a comfortable 3-1 lead.  But never say the word comfortable and Andover Gold in the same sentence.  The Huskies fought and fought the whole game. Down 4-1, Jack Gerdes scored for Andover with five minutes left to cut the lead to two.  The final five minutes the Huskies battled and battled but could not get the magical third goal to make things interesting.

Final score 4-2 in favor of Eden Prairie and earn a bid into the YHH All Star Squirtacular (another tandem entry with their big brother A team).
