Super Rink Peewee A tourney opening round end in OTs

Chaska Chanhassen Peewee A team scores in their 2-1 ot loss to Champlin Park at the Super Rink Firday

Three of the four quarterfinal peewee A tourney games played in the 2012 Super Rink Spectacular ended in overtime. After North St. Paul beat Andover’s Peewee A team (the Huskies AA team lost to Eden Prairie’s AA team 6-3 at the Eden Prairie Tourney), Irondale/St. Francis beat Woodbury 4-3 in an overtime/shootout game.

In the lower bracket, St. Louis Park beat Mounds View 3-2 in overtime and Champlin Park beat Chaska/Chanhassen’s Peewee A team 2-1 in an overtime/shootout game.

St. Louis Park took a 1-0 lead on an unassisted goal by Luke Mobley halfway through the first period. Mounds View’s Joe Sutton scored twice in the opening minutes of the second period to tie the score. The Mustang’s Joe Bonfe and Thomas Winges got the assists. Halfway through the third period, St. Louis Park’s Jack Elias tied the game on an unassisted goal.

Regulation time ended with a 2-2 tie. One minute into the overtime period, the Orioles’ Winges scored the game winner. Andrew Nagle and Nick Simser got the assist.

After a scoreless first period, Chaska scored early in the second to take a 1-0 lead over Champlin Park. The Rebels came back to tie the game with an early third period goal. Both teams missed great scoring opportunities late in the third period.

The 5 minute running time 4 on 4 overtime period went scoreless. In the three person shootout, both team’s shooters missed on the first round, the Rebels scored on the second round and Chaska’s shot barely missed when the puck bounced off the left corner of the net and out. The Rebels final shooter scored to end the game.

North St. Paul plays Irondale/St. Francis in the first semifinal Saturday afternoon. The second semifinal Saturday is a battle of the parks; St. Louis Park plays Champlin Park.
