Last night, at the Tartan Ice Arena in Oakdale MN, the Tartan Bantam A team beat New Richmond WI Bantam A team 4-0 in District 2 play. It was their third D2 game in the past week for the New Richmond Tigers.
At the Edina Bantam B1 tourney last New Year’s Day, the New Richmond, WI Tigers surprised everybody by making the tourney finals before losing to the Edina B1’s in the championship game. It was a David and Goliath kind of story, one everyone likes to read and see.
David has returned this year. Eleven of the fifteen players on that New Richmond Bantam team are back. They played last night. They played in last year’s Edina tourney. They played in District 2′s Bantam B1 league last year.
This year, they have returned to D2 this season and are playing in District 2’s Bantam A league; one of the top bantam leagues in Minnesota.
The Tigers are organized per USA Hockey rules, by birth year. Last season, they had a 15 player roster with four 1998 borne players. The 11 returnees were 1999 borne. New Richmond was considered by USA Hockey a 98 Tier II Bantam A team or as some would call them, a bantam A major team.
This year, they have a 15 player roster again. The 11 returnees have been augmented with four 2000 borne players and is considered by USA Hockey a major 99 Tier II Bantam A team again.
This approach allows New Richmond to play in Wisconsin’s WAHA State Tourney next March.
More importantly, the approach gives New Richmond’s association needed competition without having to travel far on the weekends and to be able to play mid-week games. The Tartan Arena is a half hour drive from New Richmond.
In Western Wisconsin (along the St. Croix River), it is difficult to find competition without having to drive long distances.
The Tigers opened their D2 season last weekend losing to top ranked Stillwater AA team 9-0 and tying Mounds View A 2-2 in their first two D2 games. Thursday, the Tigers traveled to Tartan to play the NOW ranked #2 Titans in their third D2 game of the season.
Tartan A beat the Tigers 4-0. That puts New Richmond’s record at 0-2-1. It is early in the season for the Tigers and they showed up with two forwards who did not dress for the game. The “Davids” turned in a gutty performance against a Tartan team that has done well going 6-1 in the early season. Their last three games were wins over Grand Rapids AA (3-2), Sibley AA (6-4), and White Bear Lake AA (4-3).
In the chase for the “Goliath” (the D2 title) it is early innings.
