A great first day of action at the inaugural BIG Pumpkin tournament co-hosted by YHH and Bloomington Amateur Hockey. Organizing a great field of teams including 9 of the 10 of YHH’s pre-season Top 10…it promises to be an exciting weekend of hockey.

The first five games were played Thursday.  Number 1 seed and heavy favorite Edina played, two top 10 teams, Chaska Chan and Wayzata collided in pool play, White Bear Lake and Lakeville South matched up and Eden Prairie and Andover played in another game of two top 10 teams.

Game 1

White Bear Outlasts Lakeville

White Bear Lake outplayed and out skated Lakeville South early, jumping to a 2-0 lead.  Goals by Jack Steidl and Cullen Johnson gave the Bears the edge.  But the Cougars fought back and made a serious game of it.  Lakeville’s Sklyer Rust got the Cougars back into the game with a pretty goal to cut the Bears lead in half and give his team a much needed boost.  For much of the third period, Lakeville was on the prowl.  Getting great scoring chances in the final minutes, but no prize. In the final seconds, Chase Bill got an empty net goal to seal the win for the Bears, 3-1. Final.

Game 2

Chaska Chan edges Wayzata

In a matchup of two top 10 teams, Wayzata got out of the gates early when Kaden Bohlsen scored 32 seconds into when he took a pass from Luc Monney and rifled into the upper right corner of the top shelf to give the Trojans an early lead. Chaska Chan would apply a lot of pressure on Wayzata but with no luck, until late in the first when Blaine Warnert scored in front to tie with 22 seconds left in the first. Early in the second, the StormHawks would grab the lead when scoring machine Ethan Benz scored on a pretty wrist shot to give Chaska Chan the lead 2-1. Wayzata fought back pressuring a turnover and Jimmy Ostapeic gunned in a low wrist shot past the goalie’s glove side. But Benz wasn’t done yet, he got a pretty pass from Sawyer Schugel and he buried it top shelf to give Chaska Chan the lead halfway through the third. Late in the game, Benz would get the hat trick on an assist from Calvin Barrett to ice the game for the StormHawks, 4-2.

Game 3

Huskies take down Eagles 4-2

Charlie Schoen was as good as advertised Thursday for Andover.  The second year skater showed great skill with or without the puck.  The Huskies first goal was credited to Luke Kron, but Schoen is the player who created the play skating hard down the left wing firing a low hard shot on goal which forced a juicy rebound for Kron to bury. Later up 2-0, Schoen did it again, he beat his man got into space and created a nice goal for line mate Michael Clough to finish off to give Andover a comfortable 3-0 lead. Eden Prairie was not very effective in setting any kind of tone.  Even after a pretty goal by EP’s Spencer Rudrud to make it 3-1, the Eagles just weren’t clicking. The Andover speed was giving the Eagles trouble. Speaking of trouble, Andover got into a lot of trouble down the stretch with the referees.  A late tripping call, gave the Eagles a power play and they capitalized with a goal by Jacob Lillejord to make it 3-2. From this point of the game on, the Eagles were finally clicking.  A full on attack caused another penalty by Andover with 1:40 left.  The Eagles gained control of the zone and pulled their goalie for a 6 on 4 run to tie it late.  Enter Charlie Schoen.  Schoen caught an EP defender with the puck on the blue line and he picked his pocket, skated the length of the ice and finished off the Eagles for the W.

Game 4

Prior Lake takes it Roseville

Prior Lake entered the BIG Pumpkin as a top ten team and left very little doubt as to why they will contend for the upper division of District 6 this year. Roseville has a great group of kids that plays very well together.  The Raiders got on the board early in the second on a Power Play goal on a shot on the ice by Nate Bifulk.  The Lakers would strike back when Matthew Riley scored on an assist from tiny Owen Neuharth. Seven seconds later the Lakers would take the lead when Charlie Cashmark scored to make it 2-1. PL standout Jackson Jutting scored in the middle of the third to give the Lakers a 3-1 lead halfway through the third. The Lakers would go onto score a couple more including a Power Play goal by Nathan Green late to ice the game 5-2 for Prior Lake.
