Moorhead PeeWees win, Bantams come up short

The Eden Prairie Winter Classic PeeWee A and Bantam A is a great tournament drawing in several true large association A teams.  Teams that find themselves in between AA and B1 hockey.  A hockey at the PeeWee and Bantam level can be hard to put your finger on. Some nights these teams can look as good as a AA team and other nights they can barely catch a pass or hit the net.

The Moorhead PeeWee and Bantam A teams are no different.  Both teams have hit the road several times this season in an effort to find like competition to prepare themselves for District, Region and potentially State play.

PeeWee A Game

After a scoreless first, Centennial got on the board first when Ethan Will scored for the Cougars.  The rest of the period was all Spuds. Thirty seconds later, Alec Thingvold got a goal for the Spuds to tie it at 1. A couple minutes later, Jeron Sheldon got a goal for the Orange and Black to make it 2-1. A minute later, Jake Olson scored for the Spuds to lift them to a two goal advantage 3-1. The goals just kept coming when number first year skater, Michael Overbo got loose in the slot and made it 4-1 in favor of Moorhead after 2.

In the third period, the tide turned for Centennial.  The breaks they didn't get in the first two periods they started to get in the third.  Brent Marciano scored to make it 4-2. Less than a minute later Cole Jackson took a nice feed from Marciano and cut the Spud lead to 4-3.

The rest of the third was thrilling end to end action with both teams having their chances. Down the stretch, it was all Centennial.  Moorhead got a cross-checking penalty with 1:15 to go and the Cougars put on great sustained pressure, but nothing that could solve the tough defense of Moorhead. Final Score: Moorhead 4, Centennial 3.

Bantam A Game

Stillwater and Moorhead Bantam A teams come into the Winter Classic with nice resumes of wins and probably a loss or two that they'd like to have back. This game looked to a toss up based on comparative score.  On this night the Ponies outplayed Moorhead.  Starting with winning puck battles along the boards to races for loose pucks.

Winning those battles ended up equaling goal scoring opportunities for the Ponies.  In the middle of the first, after clearing off a Moorhead man advantage, Stillwater scored on a nice wrist shot top shelf.  At the end of 1, it was 1-0 Stillwater.  The second period was all Stilwater.  They scored every way possible, first on a breakaway then in front of the next and then finally a loose rebound that was buried by the Stillwater winger.

Every time Moorhead would gain some offensive zone control or momentum, Stillwater had an answer. Whether it was their strong defense or their rock solid goalie John Hahn.  Moorhead nevery really made the Stillwater Defender/Goalie team sweat. Final Score: Stillwater 4, Moorhead 0.
