Can Wayzata take out Edina in Coon Rapids?

MN Teams to Watch says Edina will go all the way.

The Best of Bantam A head to Coon Rapids

The next couple weeks, state tournaments will be taking place all over Minnesota, two at Excel Enegy Center and others like the Bantam A tourney in Coon Rapids. For each tourney, eight teams are left with their season still rolling and have a shot at the state title. The MN Hockey State tournaments will be held March 14th to March 16th. On the 16th, one team will be crowned the State Champions of the MN Hockey tournament for their age level. Edina Hornets are always a favorite in these brackets, but this year for Bantam A, teams like Delano/Crow River and Tartan will be looking to add a little shock to the tournament. The Bantam A tournament will be held at a wonderful rink in Coon Rapids. Here is a quick look and sneak peek of "my" predictions on which teams will be the best of the best for Bantam A this year.

First Round (Friday)

#38 East Grand Forks v #8 Wayzata

The Call: Wayzata is a great team this year, but have had some tough losses including one last weekend to Marshall (3-2). East Grand Forks won the West Regional Tournament, defeating Blaine (7-0), Moorhead (4-3), and Alexandria (4-1). Watch out for Defensman Collin Kubinski (#8) and sniper Maclane King (#15) for the Trojans. The Green Wave also have a couple stars...They have a Nick Derrick (#17) or  Bauer Brown (#10)

Prediction: Wayzata > EGF (5-3)

#3 Tartan v #18 Farmington

The Call: Tartan is a highly skilled team with a lot of talent. Tartan won the North Regional Tournament last weekend going 3-0 in the tournament.  Tartan has played Farmington once this year which Farmington won (3-1). The Tigers got second in the East Regional Tournament, winning their last four in a row to get the second seed to the state tournament.

Prediction: Farmington > Tartan (3-2)

#2 Delano/Crow River v #11 Alexandria

The Call: Delano won the South Regional Tournament with a 4-3 win over Orono. Delano scored a total of twenty one goals in three games during the regional tournament. Alexandria has had some key wins including won over Wayzata (3-1) and a 5-3 win over Farmington. Alexandria is one of the top teams in the state and the are lead by players like Mack Strong (#8) and Micah Christensen (#16).

Prediction: Delano > Alexandria (6-3)

#1 Edina v #9 Highland Central

The Call: Edina is easily the best team in Minnesota for Bantam A. They took second in the Roseau BAA/BA tournament, losing in a shootout to OMG AA in the championship. Highland Central won the Lake Superior Classic up in Duluth earlier this year. Both teams will be good. Last time these squads met, Edina won 5-4. Watch out for Alex Bakke (#15) and (#16 Parker Rickert) for the Hornets. Ray Christie is a special talent for the Capitals. This will be the best game of the first round.

Prediction: Edina > Highland Central (4-2)

Semifinals (Saturday)

Nate Clark buries one for Wayzata against Edina.

Saturdays Semi-Finals:

Wayzata > Farmington (3-1)...the Trojans will have too many weapons for the Tigers. On top of the great skaters, goaltenders Sawyer Anderson and Peyton Melin for the Trojans will be tough to beat.

Edina > Delano (4-3)...in another close game for Edina, the Hornets strong depth will be a tough match for the Tigers.

Championship Sunday

Edina's Alex Bakke goes top shelf against Mankato in East Region final.

Consolation: Tartan > Alexandria

3rd Place Game: Delano > Farmington

State Championship:

Edina > Wayzata - Once again, the Hornets will be able to win another State Tournament. Edina is on a twenty four non-loss streak (3 ties) since their last loss which was to Wayzata in the Edina Invite. That game was a one goal game. These team have played each other three times, each team going 1-1-1. The last time they met, Edina won in a crazy 6-5 championship game win in the Eden Prairie Tournament. This will be a great game Sunday afternoon.

Dark Horse

All eight teams in this field have a legit shot at winning the title on Sunday. Farmington is playing great hockey the second half of the season. The way they played in Cottage Grove during the East Regional leads us to believe they could make a deep run this next week at State.
