Luverne Ninth Grader ends his Recruitment to play for the Gophers

Jaxon Nelson, Future Gopher

On Thursday night, ninth grade phenom Jaxon Nelson gave a verbal commitment to Don Lucia and the Minnesota Golden Gophers. The 6 foot 2 inch Power Forward realized his dream of playing for the maroon and gold. Long considered the best ninth grade skater in the Minnesota high school ranks, Nelson finished his Freshman season with 83 points (41G/42A) and was the state's third leading scorer.

The 185 pounder who hails from tiny Magnolia, Minnesota had plenty of choices to attend college. YHH caught up to Jaxon Thursday night and he said he had narrowed down his list to Minnesota, North Dakota and St. Cloud. But he always knew that being a Gopher is what he wanted. "(before my recruitment) I had always wanted to play for the University of Minnesota and they provided me that opportunity," said Nelson. "Minnesota is a special place." When deciding where to go, he said he just knew. "I've just always the fit was right for me, nothing against the other schools, but Minnesota was always at the top of my list."

In the Summer of 2010, Jaxon became a household name to youth hockey fans when he was chosen the Tournament MVP of the Brick Super Novice Tournament in Edmonton, AB. A tournament that attracts the best Squirt aged players from all over North America. Since then, he has continued on a meteoric rise, all the while mostly staying home in Luverne and playing for the hometown Cardinals. Speculation has always been rampant on where Jaxon will be headed next. Most think he will stay with Luverne as a Sophomore and decide between the USNDTP in Ann Arbor or the USHL after that process unfolds next Spring.

Jaxon was very thankful to people in Luverne who have supported him during his young hockey career. "I would like to thank my parents, sisters, family, friends, coaches and the entire community of Luverne for all of their support," said Nelson on Thursday after his commitment.

It is always a great story when a Minnesota kid realizes his dream of playing for the Gophers. The entire community of Luverne must be very proud.
