Junior Forward has 2 Shorties in 8-1 Rout of Sibley

The SPA Spartans dominated play against the Henry Sibley Warriors Tuesday night at Drake Arena, winning 8-1 to improve their record to 6-3 on the year. The star of the game was Matt Dahlseide, as he scored four goals, two of them short-handed.

The Spartans were working hard in the first period and got on the board late in that period with a goal from junior forward Jack Johnston at 13:26.   Just two minutes later Cullen McCabe scored for the Spartans to take a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.  Those two goals capped off a period of hard work and speed for the Spartans.

Spartan Head Coach, Matt Funk said, “Our plan was to wear them out defensively and get them moving in their own end. They are well coached and play a strong game defensively. We needed to shoot from everywhere and use our speed. We knew if we did that it would eventually wear them out.”

Matt Dahlseide had 4 goals Tuesday night

In the second period things worsened for the Warriors.  Dahlseide scored a power play and short-handed goal in the second and Justin Jallen added a shorty as well. Funk had this to say about Dahlseide’s game, “Matt is a goal scorer and we have been talking with him all year to keep shooting and the goals will come. Tonight he was in the right spot and his linemates McCabe and Johnston found him numerous times.”  Also, in that second period the Spartans outshot the Warriors 17-1.

SPA seemed to keep their feet moving all night and really took advantage of the times the Warriors were caught flat-footed. If an 8-1 score wasn’t enough, the Spartans dominated in shots, winning that battle 42-12.

When asked about his team's overall speed and play, Funk had this to say, “We are finally getting healthy and hitting on all strides. We talk every game on getting a fast start and playing our game. We know our speed is our strength and to get us in the right spot we need all three lines flying.”
