Defending USA champs stop top Minnesota team, 4-2

Dylan Schneider tallied two assists to give Shattuck-St. Mary’s a two-goal edge that resulted in a 4-2 victory over the Minnesota Blades Tuesday night at Mariucci Arena. Schneider jumpstarted the Sabres’ offense at the beginning of the final two periods in a matchup featuring two of the country’s best U16 teams.

Kaden Bohlsen crashed the Blades net and scored a gritty goal off a pass from Schneider just a minute and 14 seconds into the second frame to give Shattuck-St. Mary’s a 2-1 lead -- it’s first of the game.

Huston Karpman ripped a shot from the slot into a wide open net 2:33 into the final period, a result of some tic-tac-toe passing from Schneider to Mason Perich that drew Blades goaltender Benny Garrity out of position.

The Blades replied 44 seconds later after defenseman Brady Ziemer intercepted a pass in the neutral zone, carried it into the slot where Brady Meyer slipped a pass across to Shane Griffin.

The scoring flurry was still unfinished as McKade Webster one-timed a shot to the back of the Sabres net off 2-on-1 pass from Robert Mastrosimone just 18 seconds later for the final goal of the game.

“We responded really well after they scored and we went right back and scored on them,” Sabres coach Mark Abalan said. “Those are crucial times in hockey games -- responding after the other team scores.” Shattuck-St. Mary’s goalie J.P. Mella bounced back making numerous clutch saves in the waning minutes of the game and his team returned the favor killing a penalty with ease to close the game.

Last year’s game on the Olympic sheet was a tie and even after a clear decision this time around, both teams felt there was still some unfinished business that provoked a post-game scuffle. “We tell our guys we play them between the whistles and I don’t like seeing that at all,” Abalan said. “Luckily it didn’t get too out of hand.”

Both teams were worn after weekend series which could have led to frustrations playing on a larger rink, but Abalan overall felt it was a good outing. “It looked sloppy in the beginning but I think it was two teams with a lot of good players and it was real competitive,” he said.

Brady Ziemer, Minnesota Blades defenseman - The Holy Family Catholic product played sound-physical defense and went a step further, jumping the lane and intercepting a pass in the neutral zone that he turned into a Blades goal.

J.P. Mella, Shattuck-St. Mary’s goaltender - Mella showed poise in net after giving up his second goal of the night, stopping breakaway chances and a late surge by the Blades that was highlighted by a flashy right leg save.
