Game recaps from Saturday's semifinals, New England and Great Plains advance to finals.

Great Plains celebrates after its 3-2 win over Rocky Mountain on Saturday night.

Semifinals: New England 9, Team Minnesota 2

As it has all week, New England played the role of rude guests in the state of hockey, this time laying a 9-2 drubbing on Team Minnesota in the first semifinal matchup of Saturday night.

New England notched four goals in the first period alone, with Egan Beveridge scoring twice and single goals coming from Aaron Obobaifo and William Belle. Using a series of offensive possessions highlighted by slick puck movement and exquisite timing, New England scored four more times in the second period to put the game out of reach for Team Minnesota.

Billy MacAusland, Ben Dearden, Van Martin, and Nick Thornton scored once each in the second for New England, with Dearden’s goal coming on the powerplay. Dylan Otten finally got Team Minnesota on the board with a goal at the 12:22 mark of the period.

Midway through the third, New England’s Justin Graf put in the ninth goal of the game for his group, while Jack Stanius scored for Team Minnesota 29 seconds later for the final score. Van Martin turned in his best game of the tournament for New England, registering a goal and three assists in the win.

Semifinals: Great Plains 3, Rocky Mountain 2

It took 3.3 seconds, and it will become part of The Show’s fabric of history going forward.

On a face-off in the Rocky Mountain zone, Great Plains center Parker Deschene poked the drop through the skates of his Rocky Mountain counterpart, sidestepped a defender, and snuck a shot/pass hybrid between the legs of goaltender Harry Boettiger for the game-winning goal, sending Great Plains to the championship game against New England on Sunday morning.

Without Deschene’s heroics, Great Plains may not have survived overtime, as Rocky Mountain owned the momentum after tying the game with just 1:35 left in regulation on a goal by Logan Anderson. Prior to Anderson’s goal, Dimitri Tioumentsev pulled Rocky Mountain within one at 2-1 midway through the period, beating Great Plains netminder Landon Huber with a clean wrist shot over his blocker.

Just as in previous games, Great Plains struggled to maintain a lead after a strong start, as Gavin McNeil notched two goals in the first period to put Great Plains up 2-0 before squandering the lead in the third period.

While Deschene was named Player of the Game for his game-winning goal, Boettiger was equally deserving of the honor, making more than 30 saves during the hard-luck loss.
