Carter Krenke ties the game for the Penguins with just 42 seconds remaining in regulation. The Penguins would go on to defeat Team North Dakota in a shootout by a final score of 4-3.
After twelve hours and forty-one minutes (and counting), the sun has finally set (metaphorically, because physically the sun abandoned us several hours ago), on the second day of the Bantam Elite League Minor Division's excursion to Grand Forks.
Saturday saw the bright lights of Ralph Englestad Arenas main rink, close games, and a pair of upsets to cap off the evening. Each team got their chance to play on the same ice as the eight-time national champion men's University of North Dakota hockey team, where the mostly-empty atmosphere did little to dim the luster of the hockey palace on the plains.
Only one of the six games played on Saturday was decided by more than two goals, with three one-goal games ruling the day. Among those contests decided by the slimmest of margins was the Penguins' shootout victory over Team North Dakota, the most exciting the game of the day. Carter Krenke tied the game at 3-3 with 42 seconds left in regulation before pulling an absolutely jaw-dropping move for a goal in the one-on-one session. Teddy Manlove tallied the game-winner for the Penguins, earning Player of the Game honors.
In the final game of the evening, the Sharks snapped a three-game losing streak with a 2-1 win over the first-place North Stars, thanks to a two-goal performance from Gavyn Thoreson. Thoreson scored the game-winning goal with just under four minutes to play in regulation while goaltender Louden McCoy stood tall between the pipes while blanking the league's second-highest scoring team. Thoreson was named the Player of the Game for his efforts.
With two thrillers to conclude Saturday, the Bantam Elite League looks ahead to Sunday's set of games, with three more contests to be played The Forks.
