Messner Nets Game-Winner for Team E-Train

What do you do when your team’s logo and the de facto mascot is about as intimidating as a rainbow?

When you’re Team E-Train, you lean into it and create a team cheer based on a train’s whistle that reverberates throughout the arena.

“Since we’re (Team) E-Train, we have a train for a logo,” forward Shae Messner said after Team E-Train’s 3-2 win over Team CCM at Fogerty Ice Arena. “So our cheer is a train. Chugga-chugga-choo-choo. It’s very unique.”

The freshman forward who totaled six goals and nine points as an eighth-grader for Breck’s varsity last season netted the game-winning goal for Team E-Train, walking the puck out from the corner of the Team CCM zone before putting a move on Team CCM goaltender Lucy Morgan and slipping the puck past her.

“A few games ago, I kind of had the same thing happen,” Messner said. “I did the same kind of thing and it worked, so that’s why I needed to stay patient (with the puck),” Messner added.

Team CCM jumped out to a 1-0 lead early in the first period on a goal by Paige McNeil, a lead erased less than 10 minutes later by Team E-Train’s Katelyn Roberts. Chloe Corbin put Team CCM back ahead at 2-1 early in the third, while Team E-Train’s Ava Lindsay answered to tie the score at 2-2 and set the stage for Messner’s heroics.

The win came just two days after Team E-Train downed PPL 1 7-2, and runs the team’s record to 2-0-1. Team E-Train’s next game will be played on Saturday, Sept. 22 at 12:30 p.m. against Team Wisconsin U16 at the Vadnais Sports Center.

Team Minnesota Flow defeated Team Reebok 2-1 in the second game of the evening, powered to victory by one goal each from Alaina Tanski and Alexandria Eiden. Ellie Alvarez scored the lone goal of the loss for Team Reebok.

Alaina Tanski recorded a goal for Team MN Flow in its win over Team Reebok on Tuesday.
