Elite White Breezes Past Elite Red 9-3

For a total of three periods, both games were close on Tuesday night in the Upper Midwest Girls High School Elite League doubleheader at Fogerty Ice Arena in Blaine.

Shattuck-St. Mary's led Elite Black 3-1 after two periods, a deficit well within reach for a Black team that featured an incredible 18 players committed to Division I programs. However, the Sabres managed to pile on three goals in the third period to earn a resounding 6-1 win, its second victory over Elite Black during the Elite League season. The Sabres edged Elite Back 6-4 in the teams' first meeting on Sept. 23, and are 7-0-1 on the season.

In game two, Elite White entered the second period nursing a 2-1 lead over Elite Red, with Katie Kaufman and Lily Delianedis netting goals for Elite White and Olivia Garrity scoring for Elite White.

Another seemingly close game broke open in the second, as Elite White hung four goals on Elite Red, moving the puck effortlessly in the offensive zone and rarely tiring despite a relatively short bench. Annie Kuehl, Adelaide Burton, Kailey Langefels, and Delianedis each scored in the second frame, with Delianedis completing her hat-trick early in the third. Olivia Mobley and Katie Kaufman also scored in the final period to cement the 9-2 win for Elite White, the team's fourth win in five games.

Delianedis and Kuehl, who play for The Blake School and Edina respectively during the high school, were particular impressive for Elite White. Delianedis showed an innate ability to pick her spot when unleashing a laser-like shot, while Kuehl showed off her soft hands and rarely lost speed while handling the puck in all three zones.

Both Kuehl and Delianedis will head to Ivy League programs when their high school careers end, with Kuehl attending Princeton and Delianedis moving on to Cornell.

Cece Ziegler and Alex Hantge scored in the third period for Elite Red in the loss.

Elite Black defender Madeline Wethington stood out despite being on the losing end of a 6-1 game against Shattuck-St. Mary's.
