Hockey For Life: Thursday

The second Hockey For Life Classic kicks off in Prior Lake at the Dakotah! Ice Center.


Lakeville North's Shane Griffin scores in overtime to give the Panthers a 3-2 win over South Suburban Conference rival Prior Lake on Thursday.

Game One: Chaska 6, Eden Prairie 3

Chaska snapped its two-game losing skid with a 6-3 win over Eden Prairie on Thursday afternoon at the Dakotah! Ice Center in Prior Lake, the first game of the second annual Hockey For Life Classic. 

The Hawks scored twice in the first period, with goals coming from Nick Olmscheid and Mike Koster. Eden Prairie's Spencer Rudrud scored his sixth goal of the season between the Chaska scores to send the game into the second period at 2-1 in favor of the Hawks.

Jack Jensen tied the game a 2-2 for the Eagles, ranked No. 6 in the latest Youth Hockey Hub Class AA Staff Rankings, but Chaska stormed back with three goals of its own. Koster scored twice in the second for the Hawks (5-5), assisted both times by Olmscheid. Ethan Benz also added a goal in the second frame for the Hawks.

Ben Bullis replaced starter Axel Rosenlund for the Eagles in the third period, primarily after the damage had already been done. The Hawks managed just four shots in the third but got an additional goal from Rhett Pitlick after Jensen had pulled the Eagles (6-3-1) within two goals at 5-3 early in the third. Goaltender Jack Stark finished with 24 saves for the Hawks. 


Jack Stark made 24 saves on 27 shots as Chaska defeated Eden Prairie 6-3 on Thursday afternoon in Prior Lake.

Game Two: St. Thomas Academy 4, Stillwater 3


St. Thomas Academy goalie Muzzu Donohue made 32 saves to earn the win over the Ponies.


Adam Eisele pulled Stillwater within one goal at 3-2 in the second period of Thursday's 4-3 loss to St. Thomas Academy.

Game Three: Lakeville North 3, Prior Lake 2 (OT)

Shane Griffin scored midway through overtime to lift Lakeville North to a 3-2 win over Prior Lake on the Lakers' home ice in the third game of Thursday's Hockey For Life Classic slate. 

The goal was Griffin's second of the game, with his first coming less than four minutes into the first period to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead. Defenseman Ben Monson added to that lead with just over six minutes remaining in the first stanza to conclude the period with Lakeville North leading 2-0. 

Charlie Karshmark and Jackson Jutting scored for Prior Lake (5-4, 4-3) in the second period to send the game into the third period and subsequent overtime. For the last period, the teams traded clearing attempts, run down by the physical play and content to clank pucks off the glass and into the neutral zone for over 20 minutes. 

Griffin's game-winner came on a centering pass from Cole Pearson, who tossed the puck into the Prior Lake slot from the right corner to Griffin, who buried a shot over Prior Lake goaltender Mason Shopbell's glove.

Will Johnson made 31 saves for Lakeville North (6-3, 5-1), which with the victory takes over sole possession of first place in the South Suburban Conference.

Game Four: Edina 6, Moorhead 5

Brett Chorske turned the last few minutes of the third period into his showcase on Thursday night, scoring both the game-tying goal and game-winning goal as Edina snuck past Moorhead 6-5. 

Chorske scored at 10:12 of the third period to tie the score at 5-5, and then potted the game-winner just over two minutes later, with both goals assisted by sophomore Jackson Borst. The game-winning goal came off a beautiful backhand pass from Borst, who slipped the puck across the slot to Chorske's waiting stick low in the Moorhead zone. 

Liam Malmquist recorded a hat-trick for the Hornets, scoring once in the first and twice in the second. Jett Jungels also added a goal for the No. 2-AA Hornets (8-0-1) in the win, while Borst and Mike Vorlicky had two assists each. 

Moorhead (6-4) got goals from four different players, with Thomas Horan, Isaac Henkemeyer-Howe, Kyler Kleven, and Nolan Westra. Goaltender Hudson Hodges was the victim of smooth passing plays by the Hornets as opposed to defensive miscues and stopped 32 of 38 shots in the tough loss.   


Brett Chorske scored the game-tying and game-winning goals for Edina on Thursday night.


Kyler Kleven scored a goal and added an assist in Moorhead's loss to Edina.
