With one measured swing of his stick, Liam Malmquist put Edina's game against St. Thomas Academy out of reach.
Malmquist entered the Cadet zone after collecting a long Hornet outlet pass from Mike Vorlicky, took two strides to the top of the face-off circle, and unleashed a slap shot that beat St. Thomas Academy goaltender Muzzy Donohue to put the Hornets ahead for good at 3-2 in the second period.
The sheer audacity of Malmquist taking a shot like that and succeeding helped swing momentum firmly to the Edina side of the ice. Jett Jungels scored one of his four goals to make the score 4-2 Hornets in the second, pushing Donohue from the nets in favor of St. Thomas Academy's reserve goaltender Wes Gervais.
Jungels would complete his hat-trick in the third period to put the Hornets (9-0-1) up 5-2, and his fourth tally of the game finalized the score at 6-2. Jungels scored the first goal of the game, giving the Hornets a 1-0 lead that was extended by Peter Colby's second goal of the season.
The Hornets are currently ranked No. 2 in Class AA.
Brendan McFadden and Roby Christy scored for the No. 11-AA Cadets (6-3-1) to tie the game at 2-2 before Edina's outburst and eventual victory.
