Delta Academy Pulls Away For Gold

The 41st Annual John Reid Memorial Bantam Major tournament concluded on Sunday afternoon, as the Delta Academy Wild skated to a 6-3 win over Okanagan Hockey Academy Edmonton.

Delta stormed through the tournament, going 6-0 while outscoring opponents 35-19. Delta proved itself to be a master of the close game, winning its opening contest 4-3 over the Lloydminster Bobcats and following that win with a thrilling 6-5 triumph over the Calgary Bisons. Wins over the Rink Hockey Academy Nationals and the Yale Hockey Academy Lions sent the Wild into the semifinals, where they scored three times in the second period to pull away from West Van Academy and earn a date with OHA Edmonton.

OHA Edmonton went 4-1-1 for the tournament, with the lone loss coming in the final game against the Delta Academy Wild. OHA Edmonton earned a 7-0 shutout over the Calgary Flames in game one, tied with West Van Academy 3-3 in game two, then scratched out a 3-1 win over the Fort Saskatchewan Rangers in game three. A 9-1 win over the Phoenix Jr. Coyotes sent OHA Edmonton the semifinals, in which the team blanked BWC Academy 2-0.

Phoenix Jr. Coyotes forward Colton Langkow totaled six points for the 2-3 Jr. Coyotes, the best record of an American team this year.

The tournament final featured 13 penalty calls, including six separate head-contact infractions. OHA Edmonton took a 2-1 lead into the first intermission, as Koehn Ziemmer and Jack Silverberg marked the scoresheet. Delta’s Josh Morri scored at the 10:39 mark of the first to cut the OHA Edmonton lead in half.

Thanks in large part to its power play unit, Delta took a 3-2 lead in the second, with Morri netting his second goal of the game and Caden Brown scoring just over four minutes later. Both tallies came with the man-advantage. Two more power play goals came in the third period for Delta, with Niall Crocker and Caden Brown taking advantage of OHA Edmonton’s frustration. Kyle Chyzowski also scored for Delta. Matthew Ward assisted both Crocker's and Chyzowski's goals, the second of which came off a beautiful one-handed pass from Ward across the goal-crease to Chyzowski to put the Wild up 5-3.

Ziemmer scored the lone goal for OHA Edmonton in the third period. OHA Edmonton outshot Delta 35-32 despite taking nine penalties, four in the third period alone. Delta’s Josh Morri led all skaters with two goals and three points in the final, while goaltender Nick Peters made 32 saves to earn the win between the pipes.

Delta Academy's Kyle Chyzowski put the Wild up 5-3 in the second period of the title game.
