Elks start fast, win going away on Friday

Elk River took on Rochester Friday at the Vadnais Sports Center as part of the White Bear Lake Preview. This would be an interesting match up of two teams looking to make their mark early in the season. After the first four teams in Minnesota (Minnetonka, Grand Rapids, Edina, and Centennial), the next 6 in the top ten will be tricky to project.

Elk River has a nice mix of first year and second year talent. Top returners include Mitch Stroh and Taiyo Larson on the blue line and scoring machine Connor Bizal up front, who will be joined by first year sensation Jack Perbix to form a nice front line for the Elks. the Elks won't be as highly regarded to start the season, but with some seasoning and good coaching by Adam Sharratt, the Elks could contend for a spot on state in Duluth.

Rochester finished second in the state last year in PeeWee AA losing to Edina in Thief River Falls. Many of those second year PeeWees load the roster for Rochester this year at Bantam AA. This is a really nice eighth grade class...kids like Dustin Sorenson, Luke Newman and Dylan Schneider made a great line last year as PeeWees, this year they may struggle early due to adjustment, but be assured, Rochester will also contend for a spot in Duluth.

Game On

Both teams got off to a fast start...play was a little sloppy, but neither team could seem to get a decent scoring chance. With 10 minutes to go in the first, Jack Perbix got loose in the slot and found Connor Bizal on the left post and Bizal did what he does best, bury the biscuit.  Late in the first up 1-0, Elk River's Thomas Laabs fired a laser off the crossbar while shorthanded. Rochester's Jared Anderson (another great first year for Rochester) picked off a pass and went in all alone but was denied by Kyle Esperum. At the end of 1, the Elks were in control, but only up 1-0.

Early in the second, Rochester got another breakaway, this time it was Seth Karesell who got denied by Esperum who came out to challenge. Down 1-0, Rochester began to control play. While on the man advantage, Karesell fanned on a pretty pass by Dustin Sorenson on the back door. With six minutes left in the second, Elk River's Connor Bizal drove hard to the net and fired a shot and Thomas Laabs cleaned up the rebound to give the Elks a 2-0 lead after two.

The flood gates opened a little in the third, mostly due to Elk River coming out and controlling the play. While on the power play Mitch Stroh made a nice feed down low to Elias Clusiau who made a nice move and beat the goalie with a wrist shot to make it 3-0 Elks to put the game away. Rochester would get a goal by Alex Thorvilson (assists credited to Paul Hofbauer and Ryan Maiers) and Jack Perbix would add one for the Elks to make the final score 4-1.

Players to Watch

Elk River: Mitch Stroh showed great skill on the blue line for the Elks...did a great job controlling pucks and keeping the Elks on the attack. Connor Bizal is a physical force...plays hard every shift.

Rochester:  Dylan Schneider made some nice plays for his team. He has great size and hockey IQ...he will progress into a top Bantam this year as the season goes.
