Cougars score 6 in the first and cruise to easy 11-0 win over Predators

Newest Centennial member Soren Frakie scores for Centennial in the second period.

The Centennial and White Bear Preview games give Bantam teams a good idea where they stand at this juncture of the season. Teams that win a bunch early are not necessarily a shoe-in to be in Duluth in March. Last season, Edina beat Grand Rapids in the Loser's Bracket of the Battle for the Bue Ox in November. Yes, that is Ninth and Tenth Place. Almost four months to the day later, one was crowned State Champion (Grand Rapids) and the other finished Third (Edina). In fact, Edina lost to Stillwater (state Runner Up) 11-0 in the early season last year. Proof that blowouts in the early season likely don't mean much.

Game Recap

Soren Frakie was a stand out Saturday for Centennial.

Centennial got on the board halfway into the first when Tony Wettstein tapped in a loose puck that the Woodbury Goalie thought he had covered. A couple minutes later Wettstein scored again tipping in a Andrew Stuart shot from the point to make it 2-0. Lucas McGregor fired a shot that beat Woodbury Goalie Tom Ogren glove side which was the second goal of three in a span of 2 minutes for the Cougars. Centennial would eventually chase Ogren out of the game when Stuart would find McGregor at the left hash and the Cougar sniper would fire a quick wrist shot into the twine to make it 6-0.

The only goal of the second period came when Soren Frakie redirected a shot by Austin Kanner to make it 7-0 after 2 periods.

The Cougars would add four third period goals to make the final score 11-0. An impressive showing by Centennial, who were a solid team two years ago as PeeWees, add in Soren Frakie to the mix and the Cougars will be a team to contend with all year at the Bantam AA level. Don't count Woodbury out, they have some nice players. Just ask St. Michael, Elk River, and Minnetonka who lost to the Predators last season in the East Regional as they won three straight to make it to state.

Players to Watch

Centennial: Hayden Brickner and Soren Frakie showed why they were selected to the St. Cloud HP 15 Camp last June. Brickner is elusive with the puck and has a great compete level. Frakie has great stick skills and an explosive shot. Lucas McGregor and Tony Wettstein also were standouts for the Cougars, both poured in two goals and will likely stain the scoresheet a bunch this season.
