Edina grabs early lead in D6 Standings

Edina's Josh Solomon makes a save Sunday for the Hornets

A game that features nine (and counting) YHH Now Prospects is likely to provide a hockey fan a lot of viewing pleasure. Sunday's game between NOW Ranked #1 Minnetonka (7-0-1) and Edina (NOW #2, 12-2-1) at the Bantam AA level did not disappoint. Both teams skated extremely well and used the body to control the game. Edina capitalized on it's chances and won 3-2 in a hard fought game. Both teams look to be the favorites to win the District 6 title as the season progresses.

Game Recap

Demetrios Koumontzis (not pictured) scores for the Hornets Sunday

From the opening face-off, both teams were very fast and very physical. Each team garnered a few chances in the early moments - but the first golden opportunity came on a pretty pass by Edina's Mike Vorlicky found Lewis Crosby behind the Tonka Defense. Crosby cruised in untouched, made a shoulder move and fired one past Tonka Goalie Charlie Glockner to give Edina a 1-0 lead. Later in the first, while on the Power Play, Demetrios Koumontzis got a puck below the hash mark and fired a high shot short side that fooled Glockner and gave Edina a 2-0. Finally, late in the first period, David Andes returned the favor for the Skippers, scoring almost an identical goal as Koumontzis. Short side top shelf past Edina Goalie Josh Solomon.

Down 2-1, Minnetonka came out flying in the second. They sustained their best pressure of the game early in the second. After a near miss by Edina, Jack Bayless and Ryan Elder got loose in transition. Elder did a nice job of freezing the defender and Solomon and slid it to Bayless who scored to tie it 2-2 a minute into the second. After fighting off two Power Plays, Edina got a face off to the right of Glockner. Lewis Crosby won the draw and quickly slid a pass through the paint to line mate Stephen Doll who tapped it home for the Game Winning Goal.

The game began to slow in the third with each team taking penalties. With the game still in the balance both teams couldn't seem to finish. On one flurry, Tonka tested Solomon with two quick shots and a rebound that the Edina netminder was able to corral. Edina had it's chances too. Edina Defenseman Carter Theis lead a rush that nearly was converted by a streaking Stephen Doll, but Glockner came up with a late toe save. With over a minute left, Minnetonka Coach Brian Murphy pulled Glockner and the Skippers mounted a decent attack but came up empty as the buzzer sounded.

Game Notes

Tonka's David Andes scores bar down in the first for the Skippers Sunday.

-Edina came into D6 play 3-0-0 and Tonka was 4-0-1 in the League.

-Tonka lost K'Andre Miller to the Minnetonka Varsity last week. Edina loses star Defenseman Peter Tabor to a back injury for 6 weeks.

-Sunday will be the first of several meetings this year for the Skippers and Hornets. Two years ago, the two teams met in PeeWee AA an estimated 10 times with the Hornets winning all (estimated) ten.  If they meet that much this year, the Skippers will likely find a way to win a couple times.

-Edina played a unique 4 games in three days. They played at Grand Rapids Friday (tied 5-5), Bemidji in Grand Rapids (won 10-3), Hermantown (won 5-1) and then Minnetonka at home Sunday.

Players to Watch: First year Defensemen Ben Brinkman (Edina) and Grant Doctor (Minnetonka) showed that they are two of the state's best players on the blue line. Lewis Crosby (Edina) and Ryan Elder (Minnetonka) showed on Sunday why they are early contenders for YHH Bantam Player of the Year award. They are both very athletic players who always seem to be the center of attention. David Andes for Minnetonka is a fierce player that makes his presence felt for the Skippers, as does Jack Jensen for the Hornets. Jensen is off to a great start this year for Edina.
