2014 YHH Bantam Player of the Year Casey Mittelstadt scores for EP earlier in the year vs. Prior Lake
All eyes will be on St. Louis Park Rec Center on Friday night when No. 1AA Eden Prairie travels to SLP to take on No. 2AA Benilde St. Margaret's. Both teams are undefeated and have a nice resume of wins. The game will be live streamed on YHH - Link to Game Here - and we will bring our readers full post-game coverage including a game story, post-game interviews and video highlights of the game.
The game will likely live up to the hype - each team is stockpiled with talent at all three positions which would be reason enough to make the game great. But this is also the first time the teams have met since the section semifinal game last year when the two teams had a post-game brawl. Top two teams, top talent and a little animosity make this for the best game of the young high school season.
Casey Mittelstadt, Eden Prairie
Record: 4-0-0, Rank #1AA
Section: 2AA
Head Coach: Lee Smith
Enrollment: 2,865
State Titles: 2009, 2011
Top Players: Casey Mittelstadt (Minnesota), Michael Graham (Notre Dame), Cole Lawrence
The Eagles are off to a fast start, going 4-0 in their first four games including a nice win over Prior Lake to start the season. Up front, there is not a better first group in the state with Graham, Mittelstadt and Lawrence. After that, the Eagles are very big and very steady. Juniors Hunter Johannes and Jared Blackowiak are highly skilled and determined. One of the keys to the Eagles are their three defensemen Andrew Erwin (10th) Nicky Leivermann (11th), and Louie Roehl (12th) who will log a lot of minutes. In goal, it looks like Shawn Durocher will get the start, the Senior started games one (Prior Lake) and three (Maple Grove) for Coach Smith.
Keys to Victory: Production from second and third line. Good goaltending. No unforced errors from defense.
Coach Lee Smith on the Eagles game against BSM: "We need to use or depth and keep the game at a high tempo. Benilde has great talent, our team defense is really important. I want our kids to enjoy the atmosphere, the game does not have as much meaning now that we are in different sections...it is just a great chance for our team to compete."
Cade Gleekel, Benilde St. Margaret's
Record: 6-0-0, Rank #2AA
Section: 6AA
Head Coach: Ken Pauly
Enrollment: 899
State Titles: 1999 (A), 2001 (A) and 2012 (AA)
Top Players: Cade Gleekel, Connor Mayer (UConn), and Ryan Bischel
The Red Knights could add hot to their school knickname, they have a #1 ranked resume, which is why so many people will want to see how this game shapes up. Up front, they are lead by seniors Cade Gleekel and Jacob Holmers, both have a great nose for the net. What is most impressive when watching BSM is the play of their defensemen. Besides junior Connor Mayer, the Knights are deep on the blue line. Seniors Nick Austin, Jared Gherardi, and Peter Heimbold all have size and experience which makes BSM so dynamic. Ryan Bischel has been one of the state's best goalies so far this year stopping nearly 95 percent of the shots he's faced.
Keys to Victory: Stop EP's top line. Stop EP's top line. Stop EP's Top line.
Coach Ken Pauly on Red Knight Keys to Success: "We need to keep Graham and Mittelstadt from having a big night. You will never completely shut them down, but we can't let them run wild. Our power play will critical, we have to match theirs, if not be better, if we don't it is going to be difficult game to win. Our puck possession game will be even more critical in a game like this, you just can't let those high end forwards have the puck too much."
Eden Prairie has weapons that are hard to stop. One high school coach told YHH this week, "they are fun to watch, except when you play them."
If there were a NOW Ranking formula for High School hockey, the formula would like Benilde more than EP. With wins over Grand Rapids, Burnsville and Hill Murray, a team like EP is not that much different. It would be no surprise if the Red Knights skate off the ice Friday number one in the state.
Because both teams have so much offensive talent, he game will be a high scoring affair...EP wins, 6-4.
