So many great moments mushroomed out of last weekend at the state tournaments...here were a few highlights.
Duluth East Near Upset: Early in the third period, Duluth East took a temporary lead over #1 Osseo Maple Grove. When the 2-1 lead appeared on our Twitter feed, it sent shockwaves through the rinks as other teams of boys and girls were trying to stake claim on a state title. Justin Janicke, after missing a wide open two-on-one earlier in the game for OMG buried the game winner with three minutes to go to end the Hounds upset bid 3-2.
District 16/Section 8 Fans: The fans from the northwest corridor of the state traveled well and cheered very loud when they got there. Signs, whistles, costumes and my favorite the fathead cutouts held up by Moorhead fans.
Great Hosts: Everywhere we went we saw great hosts of these state tournaments. In Stillwater we were spoiled with free lunch and dinner. In Coleraine we were treated to an all hockey hair contest and Grand Rapids was kind enough to have a boat show in their second rink for its fans to start dreaming about Summer.
New Stars: one of my favorite parts about state tournaments is the many new faces who rise to the occasion on the big stage. Patrick Wyers (Minnetonka) and Landon Wittenberg (Orono) got game winners for their team in Stillwater. Josh Locker was a one man scoring machine for Duluth East this weekend.
