White (2) takes 3v3 title with late surge

White 2, 3v3 Champs

Sunday marks the end of the NOW Prospects Combine. Four morning games concluding with a championship game at high noon. Also on Sunday, the boys see their testing results posted. Mankato's Layten Liffrig took home the points title with 1405.

Sunday also means saying goodbye to newfound friends. Roseau guys staying over night in Maple Grove, rivals in March sharing a drink in the Lumberyard bar and many more bonds built that make the camp as much about the strong community of Minnesota hockey as good as the hockey.

Hockey fans saw a great championship Sunday. Low scoring and defense aren't usually words to describe 3v3 hockey. Grant Martin and Conner Nelsen were both great this week and on Sunday they played their best hockey with each stopping 60 shots in 60 minutes.

Gold (2) held the lead until the final minute - they were lead by sniper Jack Novak who had four goals, all on laser beams that Martin couldn't handle. White (2) had a hard time finding an easy goal on Nelsen all day and could never get their high powered attack on track. That is until the last two minutes where they scored 3 goals to overcome a two goal lead to win 10-9 for the title.

YHH would like to extend our insufficient thanks to the following list:

  • To the parents for being flexible, supportive and enthusiastic throughout the week, thank you.
  • To the University of Minnesota, Gopher Men’s Hockey assistant coach Grant Potulny and Gopher players Mike Szmatula, Ryan Collins, Tommy Novak and Junior Gates for your time and talents, and giving these players a spectacular experience and memory.
  • To the Mariucci Arena staff for all that they do, especially to Adam Stirn for showing up at midnight at Wednesday morning to make ice for 9 a.m. practice.
  • To the LumberYard leaders and staff for running a first-rate operation and providing fantastic skills testing and data. The LumberYard is a prime example of a great facility with unending hospitality.
  • To the players, for giving your all for five days, and for representing the NOWProspects Combine with class and respect for the game.
