The 2019 rosters for the Upper Midwest High School Elite League have been released after the final tryout sessions earlier this week.
Now into its first decade of existence, the UMHSEL provides top high school players a chance to showcase their skills in front of numerous scouts and coaches from the junior, collegiate, and professional ranks. Alums of the UMHSEL include Jake Guentzel, Nick Leddy, Brock Nelson, and dozens of other NHL Draft picks.
Former (now graduated) Edina standout and Wisconsin verbal commit Liam Malmquist led the league in scoring during its regular-season schedule with nine goals and 32 points for Team Southwest. Elk River junior Austen Humphrey topped the playoff scoring charts with three goals and seven points. Team Southeast won the overall championship last fall with a 5-3 win over Team Southwest in the final. Cretin-Derham Hall senior Matt Gleason led Team Southeast in both regular season and playoff points, totaling 20 goals and 31 points.
The youth movement has come to stay in the Elite League this fall, with Charlie Stramel of Rosemount is the lone freshman among the nine teams, skating for MAP South. Stramel joins 13 other underclassmen on Elite League rosters this fall, a sizable number for the league. Two players from defending Class 2A state champion Edina will compete in the league, junior defenseman Nick Williams and junior forward Jackson Borst.
See below for a full list of underclassmen participating in the UMHSEL this season.
Hayden Walters of Saretll is one of 14 underclassmen playing in this year's Elite League.
