A four-goal third period powers Eagles to victory over ISD 196 rival Eastview. Jordyn Thies, Avery Ryan, and Makayla Moran all recorded three points in the win, while Finley Engfer stopped 29 of 31 shots. 

No. 1-1AA Northfield 18, No. 8-1AA Austin 0

There's always one outcome like this when section play begins. It is inevitable, like St. Paul streets not being plowed or a T.G.I Friday's sirloin hitting the spot. Moving on. 

No. 2-1AA Lakeville South 12, No. 7-1AA Rochester Century/JM 0

There are always two outcomes like this when section play begins. Moving on. 

No. 1-3AA Lakeville North 6, Eagan 0

One goal in the first, four in the second, and one in the third cap the shutout win for the Panthers. An Addie Bowlby hat trick leads the way offensively, but Eagan goaltender Addison Bronwell deserves a Costco-sized case of kudos for a 41-save performance.

No. 4-3AA Rosemount 4, No. 5-3AA Hastings 0

Never forget that Rosemount won this section last season. While Lakeville North is the top dog, the Irish found a way last season and returned the bulk of those players. One goal apiece from four players and a shutout from Natalie Kendhammer is the Irish's recipe for victory. It's also a vastly superior recipe to my mother's for Irish soda bread. 

CHALK-ISH 

No. 5-1AA Owatonna 3, No. 4-1AA Mankato East 0

This Huskies team LIVES for the second period of games. Owatonna has now scored 38 of its 110 goals in the second period, including three tallies last night that helped the fifth-seeded Huskies to a minor upset of the Cougars. Zoie Roush, Izzy Radel, and Grace Mitchell scored one goal each, and Leah Spencer finished with 27 saves in the shutout. 

No. 3-1AA Farmington 3, No. 6-1AA Rochester Mayo 0

Slotting this in the chalk-ish category because I honestly thought the scoring gap would be wider. Jenna and Amelia Goblisch did their thing, combining for two goals and five points, and freshman Lexi Giller notched her 12th goal of the season. Mayo's Grace Kober had the performance of the night in goal, stopping 50 of 53 shots. She shouldn't be paying for Gatorade at Graham Arena Complex all offseason. 

NOT CHALK

No. 7-3AA Park of Cottage Grove 3, No. 2-3AA Cretin-Derham Hall 1

In an upset like this, people who weren't at the game paw at the digital scoresheet, searching for clues. Big goalie performance? Imbalanced power play opportunities? A major penalty that swung the momentum?

Nothing. 

The Wolfpack apparently just outplayed the Raiders last night, getting two goals and an assist from Lauren Osland and 21 saves on 22 shots from Alayna Adamez. Big things are brewing in Cottage Grove, folks. 

CHALK 

No. 3-1A Albert Lea 7, No. 6-1A Red Wing 0 

Two goals each from Mika Cichosz and Morgan Goskeson, plus single tallies from Haley Austinson, Sydney Kolker, and Shelby Evans, round out the scoresheet for the Tigers, while Rachel Dopplehammer posts a 17-save shutout. Big stick-tap to Red Wing sophomore goaltender Amber Vogel stopped 55 of 62 shots in the loss. Vogel played in five games this season, and made 28 or more saves in three of the five contests.

CHALK-ISH

No. 3-5A Breck 4, No. 6-5A Princeton/Becker/Big Lake 1

The Mustangs converted on three of four power plays last night, busting out of the chute to a 3-0 lead after two periods. Lu Hazlett put P/B/BL on the board late in the third, but Maggie Wallander answered a minute later to quell the mini-momentum shift. Wallander ended the game with two goals, as did Lucia Juenke. Alexis Ulrich dished out three assists in the win for Breck. 

This is another game that lands in the CHALK-ISH category because of the margin of victory. P/B/BL's Alayna Boe made 45 stellar saves on 49 shots last night, her seventh game this season with 40-plus stops. 

No. 4-5A Delano/Rockford 2, No. 5-5A Pine City Area 1 (OT)

Meredith Duis's goal at the 4:23 mark of overtime sends the Tigers on to the next round. Ruby Danielson scored the first goal of the game for Delano/Rockford, and Lena Roubinek netted the lone goal for Pine City Area. I don't know if I've ever seen a high school game where two penalties were called within the first three minutes of overtime, but here we are. 

This game could also be considered a showcase for goaltending. Delano/Rockford's Kayla Simonson stopped 25 of 26 shots, and her counterpart in the Dragons' net, Iriss Sanftner, stopped 43 of 45 shots. 

No. 4-1A Winona 2, No. 5-1A Waseca 1 (4OT)

Thoughts and prayers for anyone who attended this game and had an early meeting this morning. 

Winona's Kasja Kovala scored at the 6:30 mark of the game's seventh period to give the Winhawks the victory, but both teams deserve a round of applause for a highly entertaining marathon. Emma Keith opened the scoring for Waseca in the second period, and the Bluejays took that 1-0 lead into the third before Winona's Briar Rouleau tied the game. 

This tilt also pitted two of the state's most bruised-and-battered goaltenders in Winona's Aliya Gricius and Waseca's Ilamay Draheim. Gricius stopped 45 of 46 shots in the win, bringing her season shots-faced total to 722. Draheim's 50 saves on 52 shots gives her 825 shots faced in nearly 1,300 minutes played this season.
