It seems there is more interest in “fall hockey” at the 10-12 grade level this year. The Upper Midwest High School Elite League continues to play their September-October schedule; but other events such as Minnesota Hockey’s HP-14/15 festival and the NAHL Showcase are starting to crowd the two months.
All the September-October games all are taking on an edge as players start to vie for positions on various teams. Sort of lost among the din is the Elite D League and the Ice Edge Fall High School Prospects League (IEPL). These two leagues focus on providing an opportunity for players who are “on the bubble” to play fall hockey when transitioning from bantam to high school.
The Elite D league has been playing for a number of years. In the fall of 2010, Derek Kuchera, now a Minnesota Magician, led the Metro Southeast team to a playoff championship beating Northeast 7-2.
The IEPL started this fall and will be the subject of another post.
The Elite D league is officially called the Elite Prep Development League (where the other elite league is officially called the Upper Midwest High School Elite League). The Elite D’s as they are more commonly known as, are players recommended by various high school coaches to try out for the UMHSEL. That tryout usually also serves as a tryout for the Elite Prep Development League (EPDL).
The UMHSEL is more of a Senior/Junior league; the EPDL is more of a Junior/Sophomore league. Seniors are placed on UMHSEL teams. Juniors that do not make the UMHSEL teams are usually placed on EPDL teams.
Few sophomores ever make the UMHSEL teams at tryouts; but a number are usually “called up” during the two month long fall season. Most sophomores end up playing the in EPDL and it is not a bad deal since the level of play in the EPDL gives the bantams a taste of play at the high school level before trying out for their high school team in November.
