News out of D6

The District 6 Executive Committee and Board met Monday night in Eden Prairie.  Normally district meetings do not garner much media attention, unless of course Super Powers Wayzata and Osseo Maple Grove are in the mix and a team like Owatonna is moving in.

On Tuesday night the Executive Committee voted to exclude Wayzata and OMG from their Bantam AA and PeeWee AA league this year.  Leaving those two associations without a league of AA teams to play this year.  More to come on these two programs as the tryout process comes to an end.
It was also announced that Owatonna, the only association in southern District 9 with a PeeWee AA and Bantam AA program will play in District 6 as part of their AA league.  District 6 voted to play a balanced 14 game schedule this year.

The winner of league play (assuming it is not Owatonna because they already have an automatic seed to Regions through District 9) will get an automatic seed into Regionals.  Earlier this Summer, D6 voted to eliminate their playoff system because of the new Regional process announced by Minnesota Hockey in June.

YHH also learned that District 6 accepted Owatonna into it’s league because Owatonna was not allowed into District 8 (Apple Valley, Cottage Grove, Eagan, Farmington, Hastings, Inver Grove Heights, Johnson Como, Lakeville, Rosemount, Sibley, South St. Paul, and Woodbury).

Commentary: District 6 comes out smelling like a rose in this deal.  They add another team to their AA league which in essence gave each AA team two more AA games and the league a nice 14 game balanced schedule.  District 3 powers Wayzata and OMG are still stuck without a league to play.  D6 likely voted this down to protect it’s bubble teams to Regions like ChaskaChan, Jefferson and Burnsville at the Bantam level and Burnsville, Jefferson and Minnetonka at the PeeWee level. One D6 official told YHH, “those teams don’t need two more losses in their league record when the Committee is looking at them for Regions.”
