Drew Hatch to Jackson Bisson on a pretty 2-0 break

Day 1 is in the books at Velocity Squirt tourney. The only major surprise was the margin of victory in a few games. The best game of the day featured District 6 rivals Edina and Eden Prairie.

The Hornets prevailed 17-14.  Edina was just a little too much for the Eagles.  Each time EP would inch to within a goal, Edina would extend the lead by two or three to keep them at arm’s length. This Edina team was deep.  They had several second year Squirts that returned from Squirt A’s last year: Pahos, Williams, Bisson, and Wordleman.  They also feature Johnny Devoe who reportedly will play Edina Squirts this year after years at Minnesota Made. A new name on our radar from the Hornets was Matt Swaim, not the biggest kid on the ice, but made all kinds of plays for the green and white. Drew Holt, a leader in points last year as a first year for Eden Prairie did not disappoint on Friday.  He had seven goals including a pretty top shelf goal on a Penalty Shot.

In the first game of the day, the Edina Saints beat Chaska Chanhassen 23-10. The Saints were lead by Jackson Borst who had seven goals and one helper.  At times, Borst seemed to be playing keep away from the StormHawks.  Other stars for the Saints were little Charlie Lindberg (this kid can scoot), Matt Mason, and goalie Dominic Cook.  Scoring the first goal of the tournament was Elisabeth Gerebi for the ChaskaChan.

In other action, the two favorites Maple Grove and White Bear scored in the forties while their opponents were held to under 10.

MG > Stillwater, 49-7 and WBL > Minnetonka, 41-6. The Crimson were lead by the Bitty Brothers Kyle Kukkonen and Justin Janicke  with 29 points and White Bear was lead by the Lucius brothers who had 23 points combined.  The Edina Hornets played a second game Friday beating Maple Grove Black 23-7.

Commentary: Some lopsided scores tonight, unlike anything we’ve seen at Velocity before.  Hoping that is an aberration, rather than the rule this weekend. My favorite part about Squirts is the new kid on the block no one has heard of.  Or in today’s games we saw kids that were role players as first year Squirts shining bright…Jackson Bisson for Edina, Luke Mittelstadt for EP and Ethan Elias for Maple Grove (10 goals Friday).

Scoring Leaders (Day 1):

Jackson Bisson – 16 Pts.

Kyle Kukkonen – 16

Chaz Lucius – 13

Justin Janicke – 13

Ethan Elias – 12

Nicholas Williams – 12

Cruz Lucius – 10

Brock Faber – 10
