Ben Brinkman makes it 14-13 late in the game for Edina.

A hectic day at Velocity on Saturday with 12 games of Pool Play, with lots of pecking order yet to be decided.  The two most important games for championship implications were Chaska Chan and Maple Grove, and Minnetonka and Edina.

First the other scores and results. EP bounced back and beat a very good Rosemount team 17-14. Minnetonka knocked off a plucky Roseville team that has showed a lot of potential this weekend, 18-15. Maple Grove beat Mankato 38-6, Edina over Elk River 31-19, Chaska Chan over Mankato 36-11, Roseville doubled up Elk River 22-11, EP continues to impress with a 30-6 win over Mankato, Chaska Chan over Rosemount 19-16, and Stillwater got their first win beating Elk River 11-10.

In the first pivotal game, ChaskaChan got up early on Maple Grove.  Amassing a six goal lead on the Crimson early.  Maple Grove fought back, tourney scoring leader Trevor Janicke lead the way with seven goals giving Maple Grove a 21-14 win.

In the other big game, Edina played Minnetonka.  Both teams from vaunted District 6 with several kids knowing each other from offseason play, made this game very interesting.  As reported earlier, Josh Leudtke and Jack Bayless would be great additions to the Skippers.  And they were.  The Skippers stayed right with Edina.  The first half of the game was like a tennis match, both teams taking 1-2 goal leads with several ties and periods of no scoring chances.  Edina played an interesting style of one player very high in the slot, almost at the red line. Offensively, it paid dividends creating more open ice for better puck movement.  Defensively, in an odd twist, it seemed to give up more odd man rushes. It was almost as if the two forward players didn’t hustle back knowing they had someone back.

The game picked up intensity when Tonka scored with 13 minutes to go to go up 12-10.  It was almost as if it lit a fire underneath Edina. Edina would issue an all out assault on Tonka.  At first, they show resiliency holding off the first two attacks and then the cracks became crevices. Edina would score the next three of four goals to even the score at 13-13.  But even the most ardent Tonka fan knew it was only a matter of time before Edina would take over. Ben Brinkman, one of Edina’s bigger waterbugs, knocked home a top shelf snipe to give Edina a 14-13 lead and 20 seconds later, Jett Jungels hit Grant Sillianoff on the back door to make it 15-13 and seal the game.  Final score was 17-13.
