Billy Heiam finds the twine in the first half of the Tonka Edina game.

YHH took in the first two games of the Friday session of the Velocity 3v3.  Seeing four teams, Chaska/Chan, EP, Edina, and Minnetonka.

EP took care of their neighbors to the west, Chaska Chan 17-9.  A tight first half was back and forth, mostly tied. In the second half the story was Nick Wiencek who saved everything but a sinner, including three penalty shots, holding the StormHawks to just one goal.  Meanwhile, the “usual suspects” for EP, Nick Lieverman and Noah Deraney lead EP with a handful of points.

In the second game, Minnetonka surprised YHH with great puck control, some good 3v3 strategy that seemed to frustrate Edina winning easily 20-12.  Jack Kuzma lead the Skippers with 9 points and Ty Madden added 4 goals with no helpers for the Hornets.

In other action, tourney favorite Elk River beat a young Maple Grove team 28-20. Not a bad showing for MG who sported mostly (if not all) first year players on their roster, while ER had mostly second years (if not all).  The Elks took care of business in their second game of the night, with a 14-10 win over rival STMA.

The mystery team Waconia took out YHH pool favorite Centennial 21-19.  The Cougars now have a long road to hoe and will need some help to gain the finals on Sunday.  Ben Almquist lead the Wildcats with 8 pts.

Commentary

I feel like the guy who picks Duke to make it to the Final of the NCAA basketball tourney, only to see them lose in the first round.  I’m tearing up my bracket sheet and heading to the bar. Saw some good games and some great skill today.  Bantams at the 3v3 level, looks more like a shooting gallery.  The guy we liked most after day one was Nick Lieverman from EP.  The kid was very impressive skill and instinct wise. Missing long time buddy Casey Mittelstadt to an Aunt’s wedding, the Eagles will need to lean on Deraney and Lieverman a lot this weekend.
