Day 3 of the Caribou Cup featured some pool play games and some semi-final games depending on the birth year. On Saturday, we got a taste of several divisions at both MN Made and St. Louis Park.

At MN Made we saw the Euro American Red take on the Northern Storm.  The Reds were dominant from the drop of the puck but could not muster more than a goal after the first period.  A nifty backhander by Connor Bizal. The Storm continued to hand tough, begging the question, can they hang tough just a little longer and get a goal? Despite being overmatched, the Storm had a few chances late in the first and early in the second. But midway through the second, the flood gates opened.  In a one minute span the Reds scored 3 goals to make it 4-0.  The first was a soft goal from a bad angle by Caden Sigerud, the next was one timer by Zack Sjlien on a nice pass from Jordan Randall and the third was a snipe by Jack Perbix.  Just like that the game was ultimately over.  The final score was 6-0, Zack Sjlien and Jack Perbix each collected three points and Brennan Boynton had a 28 save shutout.

In other action at the Made, Team Kodiak and Team Attack faced off.  The game looked more like a ’00 Machine Orange intra-squad scrimmage.  Both teams had players from the ’00 Orange.  It was a fairly sloppy game, compared to the standard these kids play to all Summer.  That being said, there were some great individual performances. One player that stood out was Kodiak forward, Luke Mountain (Luke played PeeWees for Tartan last winter).  He had two goals for the Kodiaks and made plays on both ends of the rink. Despite having a bunch of great players, the Kodiaks could not keep up with the Attack.   The Attack scored six goals in the second period….taking a 8-3 lead into the final period.  Any thought of a comeback was denied in the third, the Kodiaks scored two goals to make it respectable.

Over in St. Louis Park we got our first glimpse of the Sweet Hands Selects (aka ’01 Blades). After a slow start, the ‘Hands got rolling in the second period scoring a goal a minute to start the period. With four minutes gone, it was 4-1 in favor of Sweet Hands.  It was a like a wave.  Leading the way was Wayzata sparkplug Rhett Pitlick and Kaden Bohlsen, each had two points (Pitlick 1G/1A and Bohlsen 2G). Pitlick’s goal was the eye opener, batting in a puck from mid-air to make it 4-1. Sweet continued the flurry scoring six goals in the second and walking away with an easy 10-3 win.

Bracket Play

In other Bracket play news, the Machine Orange and Icemen will face off Sunday for the championship of the ’99 Division. In the ’01 Bracket, the ’02 Blades took Sweet Hands to the wire losing 5-4.  In what would have been a great story of the Tournament. The undersized ’02 Blades fought hard…ultimately the difference may have been being shorthanded for most of the second period. Zach Michaelis had 2 goals for the ’02 Blades and Kaden Bohlsen continued to pile up points with goal and an assist. Sweet Hands will face the Machine Orange. No surprises here, the ’02 Euro Red will likely face the Machine Orange in a rematch of a game Friday night, where the Orange won 2-1. In the ’03 division, the Machine knocked off Legacy Red 7-4 in a pool play game that gave the Orange the #1 seed on Sunday…the two will likely meet again in the championship.

Observations

Star of the Day: Rhett Pitlick, Team Sweet Hands.  The kid is everywhere and has a motor that never stops. Freight Train Award: Brady Berning, YHH has renamed him the St. Mike Express.  No moving creature is safe on the ice when he is out there.  We lost track of how many quality hits he had…wow. Hardest Worker: Zack Sjlien, another St. Michael kid who reminds me of Rhett Pitlick (except Zack is 10 inches taller and 70 pounds heavier)…he is tenacious to the puck and constantly makes plays. New Kid on the Block: Luke Mountain, he’s a real talent…played with great awareness and skill.Shot of the Day: Grant Doctor, slap shot off left bar and in.

Equipmet Gure: Joe Miller, MN Blades. If you need to know what players use, he’s an encyclopedia.
