Semifinals

The 02 Machine and the 03 Machine Orange teams played each other in the first semifinal.  The 02 team won 5-0.  The five 02 Orange goals were scored by five different players.  Madelyn Skelton scored in the opening two minutes of the first period and Allyson Qualley added a goal late in the period to take 2-0 Orange lead.  The lone second period goal was scored by Lindsay Maloney.  Peyton Parent and Vivian Jungels each scored goals in the third period.  Sarah Swann, the goalie for the 03 Orange stopped 23 of the 28 02 shots on goal.

In the second semifinal, the MN Blades 02 team beat the Miracle Gold U10 Tier I 5-4 in overtime.  The Blades Jada Habisch scored the winning goal unassisted in the overtime period.  Habisch also scored to tie the game 4-4 halfway through the third period and she assisted on the first Blades goal.

The Gold led 3-1 at the end of the first period.  The Gold’s Peyton Hemp scored twice in the first period.   Shaina Blomker scored the first Gold goal two minutes into the period.  The Blades’ Mariellla Vitelli scored the lone Blades goal.  The Blades’ Georgia Nolan scored early in the second period to cut the goal lead to 3-2, but Hemp scored two minutes later to get the hat trick.  The Gold led 4-2 going into the third period.  Nina Steigauf scored the third Blades goal in the opening minute of the third period.  Five minutes later Habisch scored to tie the game 4-4.

The 02 Machine Orange beat the MN Blades 02 team 3-0 for the U10 Tier I International Cup Championship in a Sunday afternoon game.  Orange goalie Olivia Rinzel stopped all 9 Blades shots to get the shutout.  Madelyn Skelton scored twice and Bridget Mcquire scored once for the Machine.  The Machine Orange posted a 4-0-1 record in the tourney; Skelton led the team in scoring posting 10 points and 8 goals in those five games.  Jada Habisch was the top point getter (5 points) for the Blades.

In the third place game, the Miracle Gold U10 Tier I team beat the O3 Machine Orange 8-1.

Semifinals

The Northern Polar Bears edged the Polar Xpress 4-3 in overtime in the first semifinal of the International Cup Tier II American tourney on Madison Swenson’s hat trick.  Swenson scored the Bears opening goal in the first 4 minutes of the period.  The Bears led 1-0 after one period.  Polar Xpress tied the game 1-1 on Abby Promersberger’s goal halfway through the second period.  The Bears’ Swenson scored two minutes later to put the Bears up 2-1.  With less than two minutes left in the game, Jerica Friese scored to knot the game 2-2.  Thirty seconds later, Madison Schoenberg scored to put the Xpress up 3-2.  A minute later, the Bears tied the game on a goal by Jerica Friese with less than thirty seconds left to play.  Swenson scored the winning goal in overtime on a penalty shot.

The second semifinal game was a close game until the Miracle Black scored three times early in the second period to break the game open and win 9-1.  Madison Seifert and Jasmyn Sibell scored in the first period to put Black in the lead 2-0.  Then three minutes into the second period, Bailey Schoen scored to put the Black up 3-0; a minute later, Jenna Lawry scored to make the score 4-0; and a minute later Sammy Schmidt scored to put the Black ahead 5-0.  The Black’s Emily Moore rolled in the third period.  She scored three goals for a hat trick.  Jenna Kurkowski also scored for the Black in the third period; Samantha Broz scored for the 04 Machine Orange.

The Miracle Black beat the Northern Polar Bears 5-3 to win the US International Cup U10 Tier II trophy.  The first two periods of the championship game was tightly contested.  The Black’s Madison Seifert scored a power play goal in the first two minutes of the first period to put Black ahead 1-0.  Five minutes later, Shelby Breiland scored for the Bears to tie the game 1-1.  In the second period, the Bears Madison Swenson scored in the opening minute to put the Bears up 2-1.  In the last minute of the second period, Jenna Lawry scored to tie the game 2-2 going into the third period.  The Blacks’ Alaina Jesh and Jazmyn Sibell scored unassisted goals to put the Miracle Black ahead 4-2 halfway through the period.  Sibell’s goal was the game winner.  Kaci Trosvig scored for the Bears to cut the lead to 4-3.  Anna Sorenson scored the insurance goal late in the period.  The Black won the Tier II National Championship 5-3.

The Polar Xpress beat the 04 Machine Orange 7-2 for third place.

Semifinals

In two spirited semifinal games played Sunday morning, the Renegades beat the Northern Storm 5-3 and the Xtreme beat the Miracle White U10 3-1 to advance to the championship game.

The Renegades’ Sammi Havemine scored twice in the first five minutes of the game to put her team ahead 2-0.  Northern Storm came back to tie the game.  Autumn Cooper scored the tying goal.  As the first period was ending Havemine assisted Madison Aune on a third goal.  Aune’s goal ended the first period scoring.  The Renegades led 3-2.  The Northern Strom scored halfway through the second period to tie the game.  Two minutes later, Aune would score the game winning goal.  Her goal gave the Renegades a 4-3 lead that the Renegades would never lose.  Late in the second period, Samantha Rudnick scored.  Her goal gave the Renegades a 5-3 lead.  No more goals would be scored.  The Renegades played in the championship game and the Storm played in the third place game.

The Xtreme’s Olivia Carlson scored halfway through the opening period to put the Xtreme ahead 1-0 at the end of the first period.  The goal was unassisted.  Katie Katzmarek scored halfway through the second period to put the Xtreme ahead 2-0.  Katzmarek’s goal turned out to be the game winner.  Molly Haag scored for the Xtreme early in the third period.  Her goal put the Xtreme ahead 3-0.  Halfway through the third period, Miracle Golds’ Kaylyn Anderson scored to cut the Xtreme lead to 3-1.  Neither team scored after Kaylyn’s goal.  The game ended 3-1.  The Xtreme went on to play in the championship  game.  Miracle Gold played in the third place game.

The Xtreme’s Hannah Benfer scored in the opening period and scored the insurance goal late in the third period to lead the Xtreme to a 3-1 win in the International Cup U10 Tier II Championship game Sunday.  Samantha Lackmann scored the game winning goal early in the second period to put the Xtreme ahead 2-1.  They never gave the lead up.  The Renegades’ goalie, Madeline Bassamore had a good game in the nets stopping 23 of 26 shots on goal by the Xtreme.

The Northern Storm beat the Miracle Gold 5-3 to win third place.

Semifinals

In two of the best played games Sunday, the MN Blades 01 beat the 01 Machine Orange 1-0 in the first semifinal game; the Polar Xpress beat the Miracle Gold 2-1.  The MN Blades’ Sarah Johnston scored the only goal of the game, the winning goal, with less than two minutes left in the first period.

In the first period, the Blades and the Orange dominated play for a minute or two in their opponents zone-holding the puck and trying to set up for the good shot.  Eventually, they would lose control of the puck and the game would transition to the other end and the defensive team would become the attacker.
Halfway through the first period, the game pace picked up and it became an up and down game with each team launching an attack, getting a shot off, and falling back to defend as the other team picked up the rebound and attacked.  Johnston winning goal was the result of a rush to the Orange net on the right side.  The shot on goal rebounded to the right slot where Johnston was bearing down.  She one timed the puck into the net on a backhand shot.

Blades’ goalie, Jocelyn Veary, played tough to earn the shutout.

The Polar Xpress and the Miracle Gold semifinal game started off like a house on fire with all three goals scored in the first 7 minutes of the opening period.  Gold’s Maddie Peterson scored three minutes into the period unassisted.  Two minutes later, the Xpresses’ Kiana Gilbraith tied the game on an unassisted goal 1-1.  Two minutes after Gilbraith tied the game, Tessa Jorde scored the game winner, putting the Polar Xpress into the championship game.  But after that opening fireworks, the game slowed with a number of icing and offside calls stopping the play.

The shots on goal were fairly even (25 to 21 favoring the Xpress).  Both goalies, Cassidy Stumo for the Gold and Quinn Kuntz for the Xpress had good games.
 

The afternoon championship game turned into an exciting game with the Blades and the Polar Xpress fighting to a 2-2 tie at the end of regulation.  The Blades’ Abby Delarosa got the “dream goal to win the championship” scoring in overtime to lead Blades to a 3-2 win.  The Xpress’s Graysen Myers scored late in the first.  Her goal gave the Xpress a 1-0 lead going into the second period.  The Blades’ Addi Scribner scored in the second period to tie the game 1-1.  Katie Kaufman put the Blades up 2-1 with a goal scored in the first 30 seconds of the third period.  That lead held until the last minute of the third period when the Polar’s Sophie Rausch scored to tie the game 2-2 and force the overtime.

The Blades’ goalie, Andrea Schreiber, had a great game stopping 31 of the 33 Polar shots.  The Polar Xpress outshot the Blades by 2-to-1.

Rausch was the tourneys top scorer with 9 points (4 goals).  Addi Scribner was the Blades top scorer with 4 points (3 goals).

Championship

The Thunder Bolts beat the 01 OS Selects 10-2.  The Thunder Bolts are a summer team out of the Thunder Bay area that consists of players who played last season in the Thunder Bay Women’s Hockey Association.  The Thunder Bolts swept the U12 Tier II Championship winning all five games by a combined score of 29-3.  Only the 01 OS Selects managed to score against the Bolts, losing 7-1 in pool play besides losing 10-2 in the championship game.

The Selects kept the game tight for most of the first period, but two back to back penalties resulted in a 5-on-3 power play for the Thunder Bolts near the end of the first period.  The Bolts scored two power play goals and led 3-0 before OS could score.  The Bolts led 3-1 at the end the first period, added five unanswered goals in the second period to take an 8-1 lead into the third period.  Karadyn Kiviaho scored a hat trick for the Bolts and added one assist to end the game with four points.  Jenna Clendenning and McKenna Corvello each scored twice for the Thunder Bolts.  Taylor Croswell, Allyson Lesperance, and Vanessa Nicholl each scored a goal and got an assist in the championship game.

The OS Selects Bella Weaver scored their two goals in the championship game.  Josie Bothun played well in the nets for the OS team that was outshot 2-1 by the Thunder Bolts.  Brieja Parent and Lauren Einan led the OS team in scoring for the tourney.  Each scored 5 points (3 goals).

The Bolts’ Kiviaho led the tourney in points and goals scored (16 points/11 goals).  Nicholl was the second leading scoring in the tourney with 11 points and 6 goals in the five games played.

Championship

One of the more interesting tournaments  played at the Super Rink this past weekend was the U14 Tier I tourney with three Machine Orange teams (98, 99, and 00) entered.  The Orange 98 team went 0-4-1 in pool play and did not make the semifinals played Saturday.  The Orange 99 team went 3-2 and placed second in their pool.  The Orange 00 team went 5-0 and won their pool and went to beat the Lake Superior Stars 5-0 in the championship game.

The Orange 00 team beat their opponents by a collective score of 32-1.  Erin Meyers of the OS Metro Selects was the only player to score against the 00 Orange.  The 00 Orange outshot the opposition 148 to 39 in the five games played.  The 00 Orange did not play either the 99 Orange or the 98 Orange.

In the Championship game, the 00 Orange scored two quick goals in the first five minutes of the opening period.  Sydney Breza scored the first for the Orange; Carolina Bowlby scored the second goal.  The 00 Orange team added three goals in the second period to end the scoring 5-0.  Breza got her second goal to put the 00 Orange up 3-0; Allie Cornelius scored the fourth goal; and Taylor Heise scored the fifth.

Haylee Blinkhorn led the 00 Orange in scoring for the tourney.  Blinkhorn scored 11 points (and 3 goals) in five games.  Mallory Iozzo led the Stars in scoring (5 points/2 goals).  Nine of the top 10 point leaders in the tourney played for either the 00 Orange or the 99 Orange team.

Semifinals

Twelve teams (three pools) played in the Tier II tourney.  After the dust settled, Sunday morning the Northern Hawks edged the NE Wisconsin Lightning 2-1 in the first semifinal; the Mustangs (Mounds View) won a 1-0 squeaker over archrival White Bear Lake.  Northern Hawks (5-1), White Bear Lake (6-0), and the Mustangs (6-0) dominated pool play.  The NE Wisconsin Lightning edged the MN Ice Bombers and the Northern Storm for the wild card.

The Northern Hawks had beaten the Lightning 6-0 in the first pool game, but the semifinal game was tough.  Paige Sullivan scored both of the Hawks’ semifinal game goals.  The first came late in the first period; the game winner came halfway through the second period to put the Hawks up 2-0.  The Lightning’s Ally Fox scored halfway through the third period to end the scoring 2-1.

The Lightning outshot the Hawks 22-20; it was a tight game.

The Mustangs’ Sophia Poinar scored with 5 minutes left on the clock to break a 0-0 tie and put the Mustangs in the championship game.  Sydney Brodt and Allison Parnell got the assists.  Brodt was the #3 scorer for the Mounds View varsity last season.   Both teams skated well.  The game was fast and could have been mistaken for a Tier I game.

The Mustangs beat the Northern Hawks 3-1 in the championship game Sunday afternoon.  Brodt scored the Mustangs’ first goal thirty seconds into the game unassisted to put the Mustangs up 1-0 at the end of the first period.  Poinar scored in the opening minute of the second period to give the Mustangs a 2-0 lead.  Brodt got the assist.  The second period ended with the Mustangs up 2-0.  The Hawks did not give up.  Bre Tessier scored halfway through the third period to cut the lead to 2-1.  The Mustangs Rachel Anderson scored the insurance goal late in the third period to end the scoring 3-1.

Brodt ended up leading the tourney in scoring (11 points/8 goals); the Northern Hawks’ Paige Sullivan and the White Bear Lake’s Sarah Moy placed second with 10 points each (each scored 6 goals).
