Three weeks ago, USA hockey announced the U. S. Women’s National Team roster for 2013-2014. Twenty five players were chosen. Out of these 25 players, 21 will be chosen for the U.S. Women’s Olympic team for the 2014 Winter Olympics being held in Sochi, Russia opening February 7.
For the 16 and 17 year old players going through tryouts at USA Hockey’s U18 National Team Development Camp held in St. Cloud MN starting Friday, the U. S. Women’s National team announcement had some rays of hope for their making the 2018 Olympic team.
The first is obvious, Jincy Dunne (O’Fallon MO), was one of the 25 players chosen. Dunne is 16 years old and could have been attending the St. Cloud camp. Dunne’s selection shows that age is not always a factor in being selected for the Olympic team. The scouts are looking for talent and will pick talented players out of the development camps such as St. Cloud and advance them.
Nor is size a factor. Dunne is a 5’6” and plays defense. Four forwards selected for the National team are 5’5” or shorter. But the best ray of hope for the players at St. Cloud is that 13 of the 25 players on next year’s Olympic team are borne in the 1980’s and that opens up spots for the 2018 Olympic team.
The 2018 Olympics will be held in Pyeongchang, South Korea. A new hockey arena is being built at Kwandong University to hold the Olympic teams. Kwandong University is in the coastal city Gangneung on the Sea of Japan.
At the U18 camp in St. Cloud this week, 150 or so players from all over the country have been invited or selected to attend the camp. The players are divided into 10 teams. Each team will skate three games over this coming weekend.
The 16 year old players selected are combined with the 17 year old players for the St. Cloud camp. In all, 10 defensive players, 16 forwards, and one goalie from Minnesota will attend the camp. They are listed below with their camp teams and jersey numbers in parenthesis before their name.
