Halfway through Minnesota Hockey’s 2013 Select 15 Summer Camp

Halfway through the six games played at the St. Cloud Camp, none of the six teams have an unblemished record.  Two of the teams (Gold 1-0-2 and White 2-0-1) are unbeaten, but have been tied.  The Gold played the White Saturday evening and tied each other 2-2.  White beat the Royal team 4-1 on Sunday and beat the Red team Monday 4-3.

In Sunday’s game, the White team jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first minute of play, took a 3-1 lead at half time and won 4-1 in a cleanly skated game.  00254 (#17 White) Beau Wilmer/Warroad scored in the first 30 seconds of the game with 00249 (#11 White) Brandon Lund/Roseau getting the assist.  00226 (#9 White) Cameron Buhl/South St. Paul scored a minute later with defensemen 00030 (#7 White) Harmon Sorenson/Wayzata  and 00023 (#5 White) Tristian Moss/Wayzata getting the assists.

The Royals’ defenseman 00034 (#6 Royal) Tanner Vescio/Blaine scored unassisted to cut the lead to 2-1; but 00222 (#8 White) Kieffer Bellows/Edina scored late in the first half to put the White team up 3-1 at half time.  Defenseman 00009 (#4 White) Matt Hellickson/Rogers got the assist.   00209 (#16 White) Luke Paterson/Wayzata scored the only second half goal to end the scoring 4-1.

00238 (#14 White) Cody McLean/Centennial and 00229 (#10 White) Max Johnson/Lakeville got the assists.  Ten of the fifteen White team skaters participated in scoring the four White goals.

Gold beat the Grey team 4-2 Sunday and tied the Royal team 3-3 Monday.

The Royal’s surprised the Lt. Blue team beating them 6-0 in the opening game.  That score was the biggest loss of the first nine games.  The Royal team has posted a 1-1-1 record.

The Grey team beat the Red 8-3 in the opening game and beat the Lt Blue team 4-1 Monday besides losing to the Gold 4-2 Sunday.

In Sunday’s game, the Gold and the Grey teams were in a 0-0 tie after the first 24 minute half.  Penalties marred the last few minutes of play in the first half.
The second half opened with four quick goals scored in a three minute interval.  00220 (#15 Gold) Augustine Moore/Edina scored the first goal to put the Gold up 1-0.  The Grey rebounded with two quick goals.

The first was scored by 00204 (#16 Grey) Derek Sievers/Tartan with 00203 (#15 Grey) Luke Ranallo/Mounds View getting the assist.  The second goal was a power play goal scored by 00237 (#14 Grey) Matt Jennrich/Centennial with 00003 (#2 Grey) Gerald Calengor/Benilde getting the assist.

Moore scored again to tie the game 2-2 and then 00028 (#7 Gold) defenseman Sam Rossini/Burnsville scored twice to put the game away 4-2.  Rossini’s first goal was unassisted; 00011 (#3 Gold) Brian Hurley/St. Thomas Academy and 00210 (#16 Gold) William Rooney/ got the assists on Rossini’s second goal.

Besides losing to the Grey team and the White team, the Red team beat Lt. Blue in Sunday’s game 3-1 to post a 1-2-0 record halfway through the camp.  In that game, 00208 (#15 Red) Matt Nelson scored the first two goals, the first on a hard shot from the right faceoff circle that beat the goalie on the right side halfway up the net to put the Red up 1-0.  It was an unassisted goal.  Nelson scored the second goal halfway through the first half to put the Red ahead 2-0.  Nelson’s goal came from the slot, beating the goalie on the right side again.  00221 (#12 Red) Curtis Hanson got the assist.

00236 (#14 Red) Austin Long/Spring Lake Park scored 10 minutes into the second half to put the Red team up 3-0.  00225 (#16 Lt Blue) Jake Theis/Chanhassen scored on a hard shot from the slot beating the goalie on the upper right side to cut the lead to 3-1 and end the scoring for Sunday’s nightcap.  The Lt. Blue team is winless, losing all three games (Royal, Red, and Grey).  Long’s line of Hanson and 00224 (#17 Red) Garret Wait/Edina had a good game.

The top two teams at the end of the six games will play in Thursday’s championship game.  The White team leads in the standings with 5 points; Gold and Grey are tied for second with 4 points each, the Royal team is in fourth with three points, the Red team is in fifth with 2 points and the Lt. Blues trail with no wins.

The Grey and White teams play at 8:00 today at the main arena on the St. Cloud Campus.  Earlier in the day, the Gold and Lt. Blue play (1:45 PM) and the Red and Royal play (3:30 PM).
