Saturday Morning Select 15 Results

Game 4 Red Pool: District 8 (orange) versus District 2 (black)

The District 8 Select 15 team came into the Festival with a relatively unknown roster consisting of few Lakecville players and relatively unknown players from School District 196 (Eagan, Apple Valley, Eastview, and Rosemount) and two players from Shattuck-St. Mary’s bantam AAA team.

The Orange went up against a Joey Anderson led D2 select team that had beaten D3 and D6 in the preliminary round and looked to be on a roll.  Instead the D2 team was flattened in an early morning game against D8,  The Orange jumped out to a 5-0 first half lead and won going away 7-0.

The big gun for the Orange was high scoring center Henry Enebak from Lakeville South.   Enebak’s play was expected.  Against D2, he scored twice and had one assist.  Ryan Lindgren, a high scoring defense man from Shattuck, also notched a goal in Saturday morning’s game.

The D2 offense was flat. Joey Anderson/Hill-Murray showed some spark, but D8 forwards put the Black on the defense for a majority of the game.

Game 5 White Pool: Distrct 6 (Red) versus District 9 (navy)

Shattuck-St Mary’s Mason Palmer scored to put D4 up 1-0 seven minutes into the first half.  Then D6 went on a tear and scored five straight goals over the next 18 minutes of game time to go up 5-1.  They led 3-1 at the half on goals by Kiefer Bellows, Matt Denman and Connor Clemens.

In the first two minutes of the second half, D6′s Max Cavanaugh/Waconia scored and the Red added another score to build a 5-1 lead.   D9′s Tucker Chapman/Rochester Lourdes scored to break the string of Red goals.  D6 added three more goals (sandwiched around another Chapman goal) to win 8-3.

The Red team played so well at times, that you wonder how they ended playing in the White Pool.  District 6 standouts were numerous, but the up tempo play and size of Jake Theis/Chanhassen stood out.  Kiefer Bellows made his presence known on the ice for the first time and Connor Clements/Prior Lake had a good game.

Game 6 Blue Pool: District 3 versus District 4

This was the most interesting game of the day, matching a D4 team principly consisting of players from Marshall (not Duluth) and Luverne plus a number of players from four other districts.  They were the misfits.  Their opponent, D3, was loaded with players from Wayzata, Osseo/Maple Grove and a few private schools that were strong and more organized having played with each other over the past few years.

Still the misfits tied D3 6-6.  The Grey did so by playing at the same level as the D3 players.  It was a startling thing to see.  Somehow, in a few days, the D4 coaches made it work.

District 4 jumped out to a 3-1 lead halfway through the first half on two goals by Garrett Malmquist/Edina and a goal by Ethan Kraus/New Ulm.  Sam Huff/OMG scored the first D3 goal.  Trailing 3-1 halfway through the opening half, D3 came back to score three times.  Ben Meyers/Crow River scored first to cut the D4 lead to 3-2, Jarrett Cammarata scored on a breakaway to tie the game 3-3 and John Hartfiel/Minneapollis Storm scored on a penalty shot with two minutes left in the first half to put D3 up 4-3 at halftime.

D4 players played the opening half surprising well and when Cammarata scored a goal in the opening minutes of the second half to put D3 up 5-3, the fans started to get the feeling that is was game over, but the Grey came back on a goals scored by Kraus and by Chas Smedsrud/Luverne to tie the game 5-5.

With five minutes left in the game, D3 forwards trapped the D4 defense in the Grey’s zone and fired multiple shots on the goalie Sam Kontz/Marshall.  He made several saves but the bouncing puck created a melee in front of Kontz and out of nowhere, the puck just slid into the right side of the net to put D3 ahead 6-5.  Mark Chase/Minnetonka scored the goal.

Thirty seconds later, D4 tied the game 6-6 when Malmquist made a neat pass out of the left corner to defense man Reese Grailer who had drifted low in the left slot,  His shot beat the D3 goalie low right to tie the game 6-6.

It was a surprising game in that D4 played so well.  Most would have expected D3 to win big.  D3  played very well, so well, that it is hard to pick three players (but YHH did).  Give credit to D4 and their coaches, they have the Grey off to a great start at the Festival.

Top players in the game for D3 were Jarrett Cammarata/OMG, Jack Kelly/OMG and John Hartfiel/Minneapolis Storm.  For D4 Ethan Kraus/New Ulm, Logan Severson/Lakeville North, and Garrett Malmquist/Edina had good games.

Saturday Afternoon/Evening Select 15 Results

Game 7 (Red Pool): District 2 (Black) versus District 10 (Green)

D2′s loss Saturday morning took the edge off this game.  Before the Festival opened, D10 had been a slight favorite, now they were a heavy favorite.  They came out in the first half and blitzed the Black taking a 4-1 lead at halftime on two goals by Austen Long, one goal by Taylor O’neill, and one goal by Matt Kiersted.  Derek Sievers/Tartan scored the lone D2 goal in the first half.

The second half was all D10.  The Green scored five more goals to beat the Black 9-3.  Long scored another goal in the second period to get a hat trick.  Long’s line with Cody Mclean and Ryan Johnson is just tearing the opposition apart at the Festival, boxing them in their defensive zone on most of their shifts.  That line is really fun to watch, but in this case not so fun for the D2 fans.

Game 8 (White Pool): District 9  (navy) versus District 11 (light blue)
D11 has some firepower, led by Lucas Dow.  In Friday’s opening game, D9 got burned early by D6 and never got back in the game losing 7-3.  D11 tried the same strategy as D6 Saturday afternoon and it turned into a seesaw battle for most of the game.  Bryceton Butkiewicz and Reid Davidson scored the first two goals to put D11 ahead 2-0 halfway through the first period.  But D9 stiffened their defense and Tyler Defore/Red Wing and Kade Friedrichs/Owatonna scored around a goal by D11′s Ash Altmann to end the first half with D11 ahead 3-2.

The score remained 3-2 until late in the second half and then Lucas Dow went to work.  He set up Altmann for another score, scored a minute later to put D11 up 5-2.  D9 scored again to cut the lead to 5-3 and Dow came back with a late goal to end the scoring 6-3.

D9 had a good game, but Dow took charge at the last five minutes of the game.

Game 9 (Blue Pool): District D3 (white) versus District 15 (maroon)

After tying D4 in the morining game 6-6, D3 came out storming against the Maroon in the afternoon.  They came to play and took a 3 goal lead in the first 10 minutes of the game on goals by Luke Paterson, Harmon Sorenson, and Jerry Calengor.  D15′s Mackenzie Strong scored on penalty shot to cut the lead to 3-1 with 10 minutes left in the half, but the White kept on rolling adding two more goals by Soreneson and William Rooney III to take a 5-1 lead at halftime.

The second half was all D3.  They scored six more times to win 11-1.  Besides Sorenson, Rooney and Patterson each scored twice.  D3 has some strong players as this game demonstrated.  Tomorrow they will play a physical D16 team for the Blue Pool championship.  D3 appears to have their “act” together.

Game 10 (Red Pool): District 8 (orange) versus District 12 (royal blue)

District 8 just played a solid game against D12.  They continued on their roll beating D12  3-1 to set up a Festival Championship game between the only two unbeaten Select 15 teams left in the Festival, D10 and D8.  The two teams will play each other at Bramaer Sunday at 12:30 pm.  The game will match Austen Long/Spring Lake Park and his line against a tough defensive oriented D8 team led by Henry Enebak/Lakeville South and Ryan Lindgren/Shattuck.

The Orange had a tough time in the opening half against D12 taking a 1-0 lead into halftime on a goal by Hugo Hartnell/Sibley.  The Orange scored 4 minutes into the second half to take a 2-0 lead and to gain some breathing room.  Enebak scored the goal.  Thirty seconds later, D12 scored to cut the lead to 2-1 and things became tense again.  D8′s Sam Rossini/Burnsville finally scored an insurance goal with 16 minutes left in the game and the Orange defense took care of the rest.  The final score was 3-1.

Game 11(White Pool):  District 6 (red) versus District 5 (purple)

This game had a late Saturday start.  YHH will post the score of the game in the next few days.

Game 12 (Blue Pool): District 4 (grey) versus District 16 (gold)

After a good opening game against D3, the D4 looked ready to take on the D16′s Lumberjacks, Green Waves, Prowlers, Rams, Pirates, and Warriors from the north.  After 5 minutes of scoreless play in the opening round, D4 got buried under an avalanche of goals; four in three minutes to be exact.  Joshua Lusby/Bemidji scored twice, Lucas Magnusson and Nick Lietner each scored once.

D4 broke the Gold’s scoring streak at the 7 minute mark on a goal by Ryan Murray/Prior Lake.  D16 just started another streak scoring two more to end the first half leading 6-1.  Each team scored one goal in the second half.  Lusby scored to get the hat trick and put D16 up 7-1.  D4′s Mark Wilson/Orono scored to cut the lead to 7-2.  Lusby scored the final goal to end the scoring 7-2 and earn a hat trick.

The last 6 games of the Festival will be played Sunday morning, then the evaluators will be making their decisions on the top 108 15 year players in Minnesota this year.
