Orono’s Will Larson watches the puck go into the Hopkins’ net in the Spartan’s 7-4 win in the opening game D3 peewee A playoff

D3 Peewee A playoffs completed its quarterfinal round with four games played Saturday at the Hopkins Pavilion Ice Arena.

The #1 seed, Orono beat host #8 seeded Hopkins in the opening game 7-4 played at the Hopkins Pavilion.  St. Louis Park seeded #4 beat the #5 seed Wayzata A 4-1 in the second game.  The #2 seed, Minneapolis Storm, beat the #7 seeded Osseo/Maple Grove A team 5-0, and #3 seeded Mound/Westonka beat the #6 seeded Crow River 5-0.

Orono’s Billy Lynch and Davey Burns scored in the first three minutes of their game with Hopkins.  The Spartans looked like the easy victors.  But Hopkins defense settled down and played well the rest of the period.  The Royals scored with just under 5 minutes left in the first to cut Orono’s lead to 2-1.  Zach Levy got the Royals goal.  The first period ended with Orono leading 2-1.

Orono’s Brenden Darby scored in the opening two minutes of the second period to the Spartans ahead 3-1.  Hopkins has been improving as a team over the last month of the season.  Their forwards begin to pressure Orono’s defense.  Hopkins scored two goals to tie the game 3-3 going into the third period.  Austin Howell and Zach Roy scored for the Royals.

Five minutes into the third period, the Spartans’ Davey Burns got the game winner scoring unassisted.  Burns picked up a loose puck inside the Hopkins’ center blue line and skated into the slot.  Burns fired a high hard shot that the Royals goalie stopped but couldn’t control the rebound.  It fell into the net.

Orono added three goals late in the third period, Hopkins added one to end the scoring 7-4.

Orono plays St. Louis Park in one semifinal game today at the Pavilion.  Hopkins plays Wayzata A in the first “loser goes home” game of the playoffs.

St. Louis Park scored in the opening minutes of the first period of their game with the Wayzata A team.  The Orioles added two more goals in the second and both teams scored in the third period.

Park’s Luke Mobley ended the game with three points (one goal and two assists).  Four players scored for the Orioles.  Besides Mobley; Jackson Hand, Willy Basill, and Shea Pekarek scored.  The Trojan’s Zachary Giesler scored for Wayzata to end the game 4-1.

In the third game, the NOW ranked #2 peewee A team in the state, the Minneapolis Storm, scored in the first minute to take a 1-0 lead against Osseo/Maple Grove A.  Jack Erickson got the goal.  Late in the first period, Jimmy Schmiesing scored to put the Storm up 2-0.  Jake Hale added a power play goal in the second period and scored again halfway through the third period.  Huck Sorock scored the final Storm goal giving the Minneapolis a 5-0 win.

The Storm played a solid game and the Crimson played a tough defense.  OMG A was missing a key offensive player and had difficulty on the breakout.

In the last quarterfinal game of the day, NOW ranked #7 Mound/Westonka beat Crow River 5-0.  It was the most physical game played in the opening round of games.  The game ended on a ragged note with seven penalties called in the third period.

The Whitehawks’ Trey Courneya and Philipp Weltin scored first period goals, Michael Uhas and Jack Latour added second period goals and Torsten Lee scored the final goal in the third period.

The #2 ranked Storm play the #7 ranked Whitehawks in the second semifinal game at the Pavilion today.  Crow River and OMG A met in a “loser goes home” game.
