Two great Championship Game match ups on Sunday at Bloomington Ice Garden. In the PeeWee A Final, co-host Jefferson took on MAML (Monticello, Annandale, and Maple Lake).
The MAML Moose came out flying outshooting the Jags eight to three in the first period and carrying the play in the Jefferson zone. No score after one.
In the second period, tournament standout Keith Holme scored the first of his two second period goals to give the Moose a 2-0 lead after two periods. Carrying only 10 skaters the Moose had to be careful not to get burned out playing on the Olympic sized sheet at BIG Rink number 3.
The third period was similar to the first two (very few good quality scoring chances – defensive struggle), except Jefferson began to carry the play.
Whenever Jefferson would get the puck in deep MAML had an answer, wether it was a clogged middle, good goaltending or a timely icing. In the first half of the third, Jefferson still had very few scoring chances. Despite the lack of goals, the pressure was causing the Moose to tire. The MAML coaches called a time out with nine minutes to go in the game to get their kids some rest for the finish of the game. In the second half of the third period, the Jags increased the pressure even more. With just over a minute left, they pulled their goalie and Jefferson defenseman Tristan Larson scored on a low shot that deflected off of traffic in front. In the final minutes the Jags called timeout to set their lineup for one last push. Despite outshooting MAML 14-1 in the third period, Jefferson couldn’t get the puck past the MAML defense and goalie Josh Cotter. MAML wins 2-1.
