YHH got it’s first look at the Bemidji Lumberjacks PeeWee AA team this year as they visited the Twin Cities on a statewide swing. Friday in St. Cloud, Saturday vs. Jefferson and Edina and Sunday back up north vs. Hermantown.

An early morning start at 7:45 made the atmosphere a little quiet, but the action was fast and furious to start. Both teams had early chances and that did not convert.  Eventually the Jags got on the board first when scrappy Centerman Tyler Rollwagon found the net after a scrum in front, 1-0. Both teams had their chances at the all important second goal…Jefferson’s Emma Bonney made a couple very nice point blank saves (see slide show below of a nice save on a Zak Justice shot). Jefferson speedy Winger Princeton Oppong made it 2-0 with a beautiful display of speed and Jefferson went onto a 3-0 lead after 1.

In the second period, Bemidji started to play more aggressive and attack on both ends of the rink. Defensemen Chase Hartje showed great speed and skill rushing the puck. The ‘jacks held tight for most of the second period, mostly in part to forwards Ryan Pogue and Zak Justice (submit this name to the Cool Name Department please). These two put constant pressure on the Jefferson D. Despite carrying the play in the second, the boys in Columbia blue managed to get a 4-0 lead on a beautiful goal by Justin Zielinski from the slot.

Jefferson added a couple late goals in the third to win it 7-0. In classic Minnesota fashion, the teams had donuts and juice together afterward in the BIG lobby.  A very nice touch by both team managers.
