Burnsville's Logan Kittleson (#4) and Timothy Urlaub (#6) attack Jefferson's goalie Emma Bonney

Jefferson AA beats Burnsville AA  2-0 (Jags 11points; Blaze 2 points)

In the first game of the Burnsville peewee A tourney, Jefferson edged out the Blaze 2-0 on two third period goals.  Both teams played aggressively through two scoreless periods; but neither team could find the net.  Both tried to work the puck in low and power the puck through the goalie.  Both goalies stopped the power attacks.

Burnsville’s forwards could gain possession in the Jefferson zone in the first two periods and control the puck in either corner, but the Blaze could not find a way to attack the slot area for a good shot.  Their best scoring opportunities came when they caught the Jefferson defense over shifted to one side when crossing the blue line and were able to swing the puck wide.

Jefferson tended to attack more off rushes, trying to create a man advantage; but both teams struggled to clear their zone once the other team established control.

The teams tired in the third period.  It resulted in 9 penalties being called, 4 on the Blaze.  At the 7 minute mark of the third period, the Jags finally broke the ice.  Cole Jungwirth score the winning goal with Tyler Rollwagon getting the assist.  Rollwagon assisted Bailey Burton on a late period insurance goal to end the game 2-0.

Jefferson draws Woodbury Friday evening in their next pool game.  A win would put the Jags in the hunt for a seat in Sunday’s championship semifinals.  Things get tougher for the host Blaze.  They face one of the tourney favorites, the Minneapolis Storm Friday evening in a must win game.

The Jags earned 2 points for tying the first and second period, 2 points for winning the third period, 6 points for winning the game, and 1 point for the shutout.  The Blaze earned 2 points for tying the first and second period.

Eastview's Caeden Phelps scores a shootout goal in Eastview's 3-3 tie with Rosemount

Eastview ties Rosemount 3-3 (wins shootout point) (Lightning 5 points; Irish 7 points)

The Lightning shocked a good crowd of around 400 fans in the first period of their game against Rosemount taking a 3-0 lead against one of the tourney favorites.  Eastview’s Jake Lieder scored in the first thirty seconds of the first period.  Davis Carlson got the assist.  Then Ryan Quaintance took over, scoring twice in the period to put the Lightning up 3-0.  Owen Dauk assisted on the first goal; Pat Schoonover assisted on the second.

Rosemount managed a single goal by Jackson Sabo in the second period with Mason Campbell and Luke Levandowski getting the assists.  The teams headed for the locker rooms between the second and third periods and the Irish came out and dominated the play in the third period, but couldn’t score.

The Rosemount defense bottled up the Lightning in the Eastview zone for the first 5 minutes of the third period but never generated a serious scoring threat.  The Irish moved the puck well on the perimeter, but couldn’t find the good shot stymied by the Lightning defensemen.  Eastview’s goalie, Jonathan Singer, was there to stop what the Eastview defense missed.

Eastview’s defense controlled the play in the third period by keeping the Irish forwards off their game until the Lightning drew a penalty at the 5 minute mark.  Rosemount established control of the puck in the Lightning’s zone and fed defenseman Max Carter at the center blue line.  Carter’s shot found its way through traffic in front of the Lightning goal to score and cut the lead to 3-2.

Eastview took a second penalty with just under 3 minutes left in the game, creating a 5-on-3 penalty kill.  It took Rosemount a minute of 5-on-3 play to beat Singer.  This time the Irish’s Zeph Goret broke into the low left slot with the puck and beat Singer on a hard shot from three feet in front of the goalie to tie the game for Rosemount 3-3.

The Lightning went on to win the 3-player shootout.  Eastview’s Caeden Phelps and Carlson scored shootout goals.

The Lightning earned 2 points for winning the first period, 3 points for tying the game, and 1 point for winning the shootout.  The Irish earned 4 points for winning the second and third periods and 3 points for the tie.

Rosemount plays Alexandria Friday night, Eastview plays Minnetonka A.  Alex opens play early Friday morning against Minnetonka A.  The tie opens up Pool 2 for either Alex or Minnetonka A.
