Eagles win 4-2 on three Spencer Rudrud goals

Mason Kruse scores to make it 1-0 in favor of Brainerd

First Period

After a minor scheduling error with the referees, Eden Prairie and Brainerd faced off at the newly remodeled Eden Prairie rink two on Sunday.  Both teams played in the BIG Pumpkin in October, both showed signs of promise in Bloomington. Each has had some success this year against the state's best and both have a star player or two that can take over a game.

The Warriors got out of the gate fast. On the first shift Nick Hastings fed Mason Kruse who exploded to the net and fired a wrist shot past Eden Prairie Goalie Ben Bullis for a 1-0 lead for the Warriors.

Both teams skate very well. The pace of the game was very fast with a lot of odd man rushes and great goaltending. On one such rush, one of Eden Prairie standout players Spencer Rudrud went wide and got off a rocket of a shot past Warrior Goalie Jacob Mitchell to tie it 1-1. Fifteen seconds later, Rudrud got loose in front of the net and fired another rocket past Mitchell (linemates Sam Wilhite and Johnny Mittelstadt got the assists).

At the end of the first period it was 2-1, Eagles. Shots were 5-3 in favor of the home team.

Second Period

The second period had a lot of action but only one goal. Brainerd had a lot of chances but Eden Prairie Goalie, Ben Bullis, came up with a few nice saves on both power play chances the Warriors had in the second. Brainerd had a few shifts of complete control in the EP end, but could not come up with an equalizer.

The Eagles had a few chances of their own, especially late in the period, pressuring Brainerd for the last five minutes.  They finally got an insurance goal when they got the puck to the net  a few consecutive times in one shift.  On the third time, Spencer Rudrud got a puck in the slot and shelfed it for the Hat Trick with fifteen seconds left in the period to give EP a 3-1 lead after 2. That goal knocked the wind out of Brainerd heading into the third period.

Shots on goal were 8 to 7 in favor Brainerd.

Wyatt Andres stuffs home a goal for Brainerd to cut the EP lead to 3-2.

Third Period

The third period got a little sloppy, both teams began to tire.  Five total penalties were called in the period (no checking from behind or 2/10 the entire game). In the middle of the third, an Eden Prairie player was carted off for hooking.  The Warriors were able to get control of the Eden Prairie zone on the Power Play and score.  One of the Andres triplets, Wyatt, got loose on the EP doorstep and banged home a rebound off of Bullis save to make it 3-2.

The momentum turned for the Warriors temporarily, but they could not muster a game tying goal. Late in the game, Sam Wilhite got the puck on the half wall for Eden Prairie and made a nice move to the slot and fired in a pretty shot from the slot to give the Eagles the final margin of victory, 4-2.

Final shot for the game, EP had 28 (5-7-16) and Brainerd had 23 (3-8-12).
