Big Weekend of Hockey All Over Minnesota

A Hot Weekend of Hockey Despite the Coming Cold Snap

A second polar vortex is upon us.  What to do in such conditions? That's easy, get inside (or outside if that's your thing) and watch a game.  Here is a brief list of ideas:

College: Hockey City Classic (Outside at TCF Bank)
High School: Hockey Day Minnesota (HDM)Games in Elk River (Outside at the Pit in ER)
Pro: MN Wild host the Dallas Stars on Saturday as part of HDM
Youth: YHH Squirtacular in Bloomington (shameless plug)
Youth: Duluth Icebreakers Girls Tourney (huge 4 day event)
Youth: Dick Johnson PWAA Tourney in Roseau
Youth: One Hockey Gone Wild PeeWee Tournament in Blaine (Blaine)

That is just the tip of the iceberg (no pun intended)...so many games, so little time. Hope you enjoy it is as much as we will.

Pro

The Wild will continue their winning ways beat the Stars who have lost seven of their last eight games. The Wild have been playing better of late winning six of their last eight.

College

Gopher Women over Mankato. Easy choice there, the Gopher Women don't lose much, the last I checked.

Gopher Men over the Ohio State. The Number one college team in Minnesota, The Number one team in the NCAA playing the The first outdoor game in the modern era will beat a school that needs to put a The in front of it's name.

High School

Cloquet/Esko (5-9-1) will take on Rochester Lourdes (2-11-1)...a battle of oustate teams. Cloquet's Koby Bender and James Newgren will lead the Lumberjacks over Lourdes who are lead by Sophmore sensation Montana Streit.

Elk River Girls come into HDM having only one loss in their last 10 games will knock off Anoka Girls (4-8-1). Abby Canton leads the Elks with 20 points so far this season and Blair Parent leads the Tornadoes with 24 points so far this season.

In the Premier matchup of the day, Elk River will take on Stillwater. The Elks lead by Jake Jeremko (33 points) come into HDM with an 11-3 record ranked #8 in Minnesota by most pollsters.  Stillwater is 9-7 and ranked by the MinnHock computer poll at number 33. The Ponies are lead by Senior John Heddle with 20 points. The Elks have been waiting a long time for this game. They could win on emotion alone, but they also have a bunch of talent, too.  Elks by 3.

Youth

Can Roseau win the Dick Johnson Tourney on their home ice?

YHH Squirtacular: OMG will win the SQA, Geneva, IL will win the SQB and Jefferson will win the SQC over in Bloomington.  To see a video of our predictions, click here.

Dick Johnson PWAA: With no Edina in this year's field, it is anybody's guess who will come out on top. Four very tough pools. A1 has Roseau, LVS and Sibley..gotta go Sibley. A2 has Brainerd, Stillwater, Minnetonka, and EGF...I'm thinking Tonka. B1 has Moorhead, OMG and Eden Prairie...Moorhead is playing the best of the four right now, roll Spuds. The B2 pool looks great, Chaska Chan, Duluth East, White Bear, and Warroad. Hard to argue with CC, tthey have done so well this year. Sibley vs. CC in the finals, with a slight edge to the Warriors.

Duluth Icebreakers: What a great field again that Duluth hosts every year for this event. Always some epic games played in pool play and the championship round.

  • 10A: Pool Winners will be Edina, Northfield, Stillwater, and Andover. We think Andover proves why they are the best team in Minnesota and wins on Monday.
  • 12A: The got the pools wrong here, Roseau and White Bear are in the same pool, we think Roseau will knock off the Bears and advance. Edina, Lakeville South and Woodbury will advance in the other three pools. Edina will beat Roseau on Monday.

One Hockey: In a great field of teams from all over the US, Canada and Europe, Edina, no matter who the competition is will take away the hardware in this one. Playing with superior talent and some top end '00 kids in a '01 tournament, the Hornets have proven they will be too much for any collection of talent assembled. YHH will be there to greet our visitors from all over the globe.  Hope they brought long johns.

Watch out for Matt Mason from Edina Green in the YHH Squirtacular
